If Yuna Kim was the dominant figure in skating in the first half of the icenetwork era, then Yuzuru Hanyu assumed that role in the latter part. He emerged on the scene in 2009-10, a wispy 15-year-old who moved across -- and above -- the ice like few before him ever had; he went undefeated in junior competition that season.

After the 2011-12 season, he moved to Toronto to work with Brian Orser, and that union has proved to be nearly unbeatable. In addition to his two Olympic titles -- which he won consecutively, something no men's skater had done since Dick Button in 1948 and 1952 -- Hanyu has broken world records for short program score, free skate score and total score a combined 12 times in his career, and he is the current world record holder in all three categories.

He, more than anyone, is responsible for the financial viability of the sport, particularly in his native Japan, where he is as famous as any other public figure in the country.
