絶対に勝てた試合でした。
悔しいのは間違いないです。ただ悔しさよりも何かを失ってしまったという感覚が強く、ほとんどの選手が泣いている中、私は悔し涙も出ませんでした。
自分にできることを。
そう思って泣き崩れる選手を励まし、立たせてニュージーランドと試合後の挨拶を交わします。
2016年のワールドカップで対戦し、交流のあったニュージーランドの選手から「お前達は本当の戦士だ。落ちること無く、これからももっと上を目指してくれ。これからも切磋琢磨していこう。戦士達をしっかり励ましてやってくれ。」
というような言葉をかけられました。
ありがたく思うと同時に負けた実感が強くなります。
呆然としている中、前回大会のことが蘇ります。
2019年イスラエル大会のワールドカップ。我々はグループリーグ初戦で惜敗し、そのまま気持ちを切り替えることができず実力を発揮できないまま2連敗してしまい、決勝トーナメント進出を逃した経験がありました。
「同じ事を繰り返してはいけない」
そう思い意気消沈するチームを集め、
「ここでこの負けを引きずったらあかん。目的は達成できんかったけど3位になってメダルを持って帰るのと帰らないとでは全然違う。次圧倒して3位になって帰ろう！」
そう声をかけました。
その言葉が皆にどこまで響いたかはわかりませんが3位決定戦、グループリーグであれだけ苦戦したオーストラリアに38-7と圧倒して勝利し、今大会の全試合が終了しました。
我々の3位決定戦の後に行われた決勝ではタイがニュージーランドを接戦で下し、女子は日本が圧倒的強さで優勝しました。
It was a game we could have won without a doubt. It's undeniably frustrating. However, the strong sensation of having lost something, more than just the frustration, prevails. Amidst most players shedding tears, I couldn't even shed a tear of frustration.
I thought about what I could do. Encouraging the weeping players, I stood them up and exchanged greetings with New Zealand after the match.
In the 2016 World Cup, we faced and interacted with the New Zealand players, who said to us, "You are true warriors. Keep aiming higher without falling, and let's continue to strive together. Encourage the warriors firmly." I am grateful for their words, but at the same time, the feeling of defeat grows stronger.
In the midst of feeling bewildered, memories of the previous tournament resurface. The 2019 World Cup in Israel. We suffered a narrow loss in the opening match of the group stage, failed to switch our mindset, and ended up with two consecutive losses without being able to demonstrate our strength, ultimately missing out on advancing to the knockout stage.
"We must not repeat the same mistake." With that in mind, I gathered the demoralized team and said, "We cannot carry this defeat with us. Though we couldn't achieve our goal, there's a big difference between going home with a medal for finishing third and going home empty-handed. Let's dominate and claim the third spot this time!" I addressed them like that.
I don't know how much those words resonated with everyone, but in the third-place playoff, we overwhelmed Australia 38-7 after struggling in the group stage matches, concluding all games of this tournament.
In the final that took place after our third-place match, Thailand narrowly defeated New Zealand, and Japan excelled to win the championship in the women's division.
