I asked Professor Kim Sang-joo of Hanseung University,
 who studies zaibatsu, about Samsung, which is a symbol of zaibatsu,

Samsung can be said to symbolize Korea's economic growth,
and the corporate wealth system.
Samsung's share of the Korean economy is overwhelming.
The asset size is more than doubled and the net profit is tripled
to quadrupled compared to the second largest Hyundai group.

However, Samsung did not have much presence until the 1990s.

At the time, the top five major corporations were at the top,

followed by Samsung, Daewoo, SK and LG.

Samsung was just one of the big wealth holders.

 

How to overcome the 1997 currency crisis

divided the fortunes of the conglomerate.

At that time, the zaibatsu each went into a crisis of bankruptcy,

but Hyundai and Daewoo adopted a strategy to further increase the scale.

 

If they fall down,

Korea will also fall down,

so the government claimed that they would support themselves.

But in the end,

Daewoo has virtually disappeared as a good figure,

and the present day has been divided into several groups.

Samsung has long been called “management Samsung,”

but I think the system worked well in times of crisis.

Unlike other conglomerates, the owner does not decide alone,

but in Samsung,

the owner's “staff organization” controls the entire conglomerate.

This organization adopted a slim-down strategy rather

than a growth strategy,

and overcame the crisis with restructuring .

 

Successful Experiences Produced Arrogance

 

From around 2002, when this came to a halt, a tailwind came to Samsung.

China became a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO),

and a huge market appeared next to Korea.

With semiconductors and mobile phones as its core businesses,

Samsung has been able to respond flexibly to globalization and digitization

of the global economy.

This has led to Samsung's amazing success today.

The problem is that this success has made Samsung arrogant.

Although the

environment has changed significantly in the world and Korea after

the global economic crisis of 2008,

it seems that the change has slowed because of their success.

 

Rather than adapting to the environment,

there are even aspects that are forcing society to adopt their own methods.

Choi Seong-sil's case involved many conglomerates, but among them,

Samsung was the only one who struggled to understand.

It seems that they have failed because they succeeded ,

that is, they have fallen into a " paradox of success ".

Korea's zaibatsu is now at a turning point.

This is because Founding II is trying to hand over management

to III with many zaibatsu.

Since III was raised in the Kingdom since its birth,

it has been completely cut off from the outside world.

 

For example,

it may have been shown in Samsung's vice-president Lee Jae-young,

who has been charged this time.

or empathy for others.

Furthermore,

the problem of the three generations is that they challenged in the field

as a business person and did not learn through mistakes .

I think this is the biggest risk of the Korean economy.

It is not a problem that Korea's economy is in difficulties,

but it is a problem that there is no one to overcome

or try to overcome the difficulties .

 

Organization seeking perfect management, innovation difficult

 

I think that it is difficult to create innovation

from an organization that is trying to manage a family like a royal family,

and a very rigid organization .

As I study and raise issues about the company, I think that, of course,

I have to listen to the explanations of the parties.

So I often meet with the second and third generations of the zaibatsu.

What I feel when meeting with Samsung officials is to be more careful

than necessary when preparing to meet people like me.

I will know in advance what I would like to talk with the family

and the questions I will ask,

and try to make settings so as not to matter.

Create a perfect scenario that does not inflict a single damage

to the family, and try to manage it as it is.

 

When Samsung's chairman Lee Kang-hee went to a ski resort

in a foreign country,

he sometimes rented out the entire slope

and shut it out to keep outsiders away.

Such an organization may be top-down but bottom-up difficult .

Innovation is almost impossible.

 

If you can not innovate in-house, acquiring a venture company,

which is a source of innovation, is a growth strategy.

Companies such as Google and Facebook are said

to buy one venture a week.

On the other hand,

in the case of Samsung, it is less than 10 last year.

Samsung has 60 to 70 trillion Won

(about 6 to 7 trillion yen, about $ 52.8 billion to about $ 61.5 billion )

of money internally,

but in comparison with its global scale of business,

it has acquired business Very little.

 

There are two reasons.

 

One is the past trauma.

At the time, in the 1990s,

it tried to acquire a large-scale company and made a big mistake.

All involved employees left the company.

The other is the difference in the purpose of acquisition.

The fact that Google and other companies buy a lot of venture companies

is "managed the ecosystem" of the venture companies,

There is no such power yet in Samsung .

I think Japan's economy is suffering from stagnation,

but Japan may have a sense of crisis because its population size

is moderate and the market is large.

On the other hand, Korea knows well what the problem itself is.

It is the zaibatsu.

We know roughly what direction we have to go in order to solve this.

But Korea do not know how to get it done .

There is no subject who does it .

National governance and governance have collapsed .

This is the problem.
