デーブ： Hmm. Japanese people mind one’s gakureki too much. Why is that?
何かといえばガクレキばっかり。
ポット： You mean, educational background?
学歴のこと？
デ： Well, if you check translation sites on the web, gakureki is “educational background”. To my ears, gakureki sounds like the name of college you graduated from, nothing more.
ちょっとニュアンスがちがうみたい。この国で言う学歴は、どこの大学を卒業したか。それだけ。
ポ： What they learned during the four years, you never know. What did you major in at college, Dave?
中身が判らないからね。デーブは大学でなに勉強したの？
デ： Hotaru no Hikari 蛍の光
ポ： Ha? え？
デ： I mean “Light of Truth”. ちがった。「真理の光」
ポ： That gives me no idea. よく判らない。
デ： You see, this motto applies to many things, goes anywhere on earth. Actually, it’s always shining in the corner of my mind.
これは何にでも当てはまるし、どこでも通用するんだ。ボクはいつも心に留めている。
ポ： Whatever it is, I think I want to have that convenient tool for myself.
なんか便利そう。わたしも欲しい。
デ： I know someone who bought this “convenient tool” at Amazon.
そう言って、アマゾンで買った人がいる。
ポ： Do they sell it on line? それって売ってるの？
デ： What he bought is a multi-purpose emergency LED. Well, it’s sort of a similar thing, though.
彼が買ったのは「多目的防災ライト」。まあ…似てるといえば、似てるかな。
