デーブ：About … what? That miraculous victory of Hanshin Tigers?
アレって…阪神タイガースの優勝？
ポ：Snap out of new year fogs.
新年ボケやめて。電子メールのシーシーよ。
デ：That’s right, Laura. CC is short for carbon copy.
そうだったね。ccはカーボンコピーの略。
ポ：That stuff, even I know. それくらい知ってるわ。
デ：Think about it, then. Why carbon? E-mail is all electronic as the name says. A long time ago in America, when you write something to several people in the office, if exactly the same text, you put a carbon sheet between the paper, then typed.
じゃ、なぜカーボンか。昔、アメリカでは複数の人に同じ文書を出すとき、２枚の紙の間にカーボン紙を挟んでタイプした。
ポ：No kidding! Sounds fun if that’s the case.
マジっすか。ホントなら楽しそう。
デ：Not on your life, dear. You can hardly correct errors when a carbon sheet is used. Actually, in my college days, I would turn in my term paper neatly typed. It took me three days to type one up.
とんでもない。打ちまちがえると直せない。ボクなんて大学でレポート提出したけど。タイプするのに３日かかった。
ポ：I know you, Dave. Even now, you are slow to set the VCR on future shows.
わかるわかる。貴方、ビデオ予約とかトロいもん。
デ：Back in the day, copiers were not around in businesses. We typed documents and delivered carbon-smeared copies to people concerned, after signing each.
当時、コピー機があんまりなくて。カーボン紙で打ったやつを関係者に配ってた。一枚一枚サインして。
ポ：Since e-mail age, delivery of copies is done in a blink of an eye.
電子メールになって、シーシー配るのは一瞬。
デ：No need to put them in envelopes, either. Only my generation and the older know its blessing.
封筒に入れる必要もない。その有難さが判るのはボクの世代まで。
ポ：You long for carbon copy days, Dave?
今では懐かしい思い出ね、シーシーは。
デ：I long for something different, the early CC Girls.
もっと懐かしいシーシーがあるよ。初代CCガールズ。
ポ：Who are they? 誰、それ？
デ：Forget it. もうええわ。
[補足] 遠い日に私も、カーボン紙を挟んで文書を打った経験があります。レミントン社の旧式タイプライターで。先輩たちに比べて、どれほどトロかったか…。歳月を経て、ワープロ専用機の時代に。そうなると、キー配列に指が慣れていた私は有利。「すごーい、高野さん！ ブラインドで打ってる」若い世代から褒めてもらいました。
