ポット： Dave, what are you watching? An old tragedy?
ねえ、何みてるの？ 昔の悲しい映画？
デーブ： Quite the opposite, Laura. It brings tears to my eyes for nostalgia and fun. This is the American old-time, big-scale comedy. The whole work is surprisingly beautiful.
その反対。なつかしさと面白さで涙が出る。いかにもアメリカらしい大型コメディ。全体がきれいなんだ。
ポ： What’s the title? なんてタイトル？
デ： The Great Race. 『グレートレース』
ポ： Never heard of it. 聞いたことない。
デ： No wonder. It was produced in 1965. All the actors, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Natalie Wood are long gone. Henry Mancine, the great music composer, too.
だろね。制作は１９６５年。出演したトニー・カーティス、ジャック・レモン、ナタリー・ウッドは、みんな他界して久しい。テーマ曲をつくったヘンリー・マンシーニも。
ポ： I know the last person. He wrote Charade, didn’t he?
最後の人だけ知ってる。シャレードを書いた人。
デ： That’s right. The actor who appeared in this movie and later became most successful is Peter Folk.
この作品に出て、後年いちばん売れたのはピーター・フォーク。
ポ： Is he the LA detective of old TV series?
え、刑事コロンボの？
デ： Yes, he had been quite a character since long before “Columbo”.
うん。彼は昔から味のある俳優だった。
ポ： We don’t get to see sophisticated comedies lately.
近年、少ないわね。品のいいコメディ映画。
デ： You can say that again, Laura. I want ask Hollywood people to make a comedy version of “Batman”. Just like the early TV series, which was slapstick funny.
そうなんだ。ボクはハリウッドに、バットマンのコメディ版をつくってほしいよ。初期のテレビシリーズがそうで、ハチャメチャ面白かった。
ポ： Casting would be tough, especially the main role.
主演がむずかしい。
デ： Batman could be anyone. If you hired Tony Yasumura for Penguin, it would be a blockbuster in UK.
主演は誰でもいいんだ。ペンギン役に『とにかく明るい安村』を使えば、イギリスで大ウケする。
