It may have been composed for a funeral, but scholars have come to doubt a 1912 dating to a specific July 1723 funeral in Leipzig, a few months after Bach had moved to that town. [Musicologist and Bach scholar] Christoph Wolff suggested that the motet may have been composed for education in both choral singing and theology. Unique in its complex symmetrical structure juxtaposing hymn text and Bible text, the motet has been regarded as one of Bach's greatest achievements in the genre. It was the first of his motets to be recorded, in 1927." For this live concert video, a matched pair of Sennheiser microphones in ORTF was placed in the center for a clear and transparent audio image along with five, 4K Sony and Panasonic video cameras. Singers: Zsuzsi Tóth, Maria Valdmaa, Caroline Weynants, sopranos; Victoria Cassano, mezzo-soprano Alexander Chance, Jan Kullmann, counter-tenors; Robert Buckland, Philippe Froeliger, tenors Sebastian Myrus, Lionel Meunier, basses Haru Kitamika, organ

The pleasure felt by modern people listening to a piece like 'Jesu, meine Freude', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, may conflict with our ideas about death. Yet such a comforting, sometimes positively cheerful piece fitted perfectly in a Lutheran memorial service, which is where this motet would undoubtedly have been sung. But whose funeral it concerns remains a mystery. Recorded for the project All of Bach on 28th February 2019 at Grote Kerk, Alkmaar. 8:12 Ihr aber seid nicht fleischlich
10:47 Weg mit allen Schätzen!
11:59 So aber Christus in euch ist
