この曲を初めて聴いたのは社会人になってすぐの頃だったろうか。
歌っていたのはハリー・ベラフォンテ。彼といえば当時いつも「バナナボート」の人という扱いで、「デ～～～ォ！、デオオオーー」というイメージが先行していたが、彼の歌うこの曲は本当に心に染みた。
だが今回YouTubeでいくら探してもハリー・ベラフォンテ版がない。
「The Essential」というアルバムに収録されている様だ。

今回調査で、もともとはDionが歌ったものと判明。

”Abraham”はアブラハム･リンカーン “Martin”はマーティン・ルーサー・キング牧師 “John”はジョン･F･ケネディ。そして歌詞の最後に出てくる“Bobby”はロバート・ケネディ（JFKの弟）のことを現しており、今から40年前の1968年に相次いで暗殺された公民権運動のシンボル・キング牧師と大統領・予備選の最中にあったロバート・ケネディへの痛切な追悼と無念の思いを基にして作られている。
