私は元大関豪栄道 (ごうえいどう) の武隈 (たけくま) 親方を高く評価します。
I give high marks to Takekuma Oyakata (武隈親方), whose ringname was Goeido (豪栄道) and whose highest rank as as an active rikishi was ozeki (大関: the second-highest rank for rikishi).
ドキュメンタリー映画「相撲道～サムライを継ぐ者たち～」で、境川 (さかいがわ) 部屋と当時この部屋に所属していた豪栄道関が取り上げられています。
A documantary film called "Sumodo: The Men Who Walk in the Footsteps of the Samurai" (「相撲道～サムライを継ぐ者たち～」) features Sakaigawa Stable (境川部屋) and Goeido, who belonged to the stable.
この映画で豪栄道関は「後輩力士たちに伝えたいこと」として「男らしく、弱音を吐かず、やせ我慢することを覚えてほしいですね」と述べています。
In the film's segment on "What Goeido wants to tell younger rikishi," Goeido states as follows: "I want young rikishi to behave as real men. I expect them to be stoic, patient, and accept hardships calmly without complaining."
私はこの発言に強く賛同します。最近このような発言を聞くことはあまりありません。また、状況によっては「男らしく」や「やせ我慢せよ」という発言は「女性に対する差別だ」とか「パワハラだ」などと言われかねない世の中です。本当に困ったものです。私は力士、そして男性が「男らしく」振る舞い、「やせ我慢する」ことは全く問題ないと思いますし、むしろそうすることで自らを向上させることができると思います。
I agree with these remarks wholeheartedly. One rarely hears such remarks these days. Nowadays, telling others to "behave as real men" and "accept hardships calmly" may be construed as "discrimination against women" or "power harassment" (a form of workplace bullying). I find it deeply troubling that such misinterpretation of remarks, or attack on free speech, is not uncommon. I see no problem in rikishi and men behaving as real men and accepting hardships calmly without complaining. If anything, I believe that such attitude and behavior help rikishi and men improve themselves.
武隈親方は、令和4年 (2022年) 2月1日付で境川部屋から独立して、武隈部屋を創設しました。(「武隈部屋」という名の相撲部屋は江戸時代から平成時代にかけてこれまで五回存在したので、部屋の名称自体は再興です。)
On February 1, Reiwa 4 (2022), Takekuma Oyakata became independent from Sakaigawa Stable and established Takekuma Stable (武隈部屋). (From the Edo era [江戸時代] to the Heisei era [平成時代], a sumo stable named Takekuma Stable existed five times. Thus, the stable name "Takekuma" is not new but re-established.)
武隈親方の指導は早くも成果を挙げています。令和4年三月場所では、武隈部屋所属の力士である神崎 (かんざき) が三段目優勝しました。(番付としては、三段目は幕下の下、序二段の上にあたります。)
Takekuma Oyakaya's leadership is already producing results. In the March basho of Reiwa 4 (令和4年三月場所), Kanzaki (神崎), a rikishi who belongs to Takekuma Stable, won the championship in the sandanme division (三段目優勝; sandanme is the third-lowest-ranking division for rikishi and the division below makushita [幕下] and above jyonidan [序二段]).
武隈部屋から早く関取が登場することを期待しています。
I hope to see a new sekitori (関取: a salaried rikishi, or any rikishi with the rank of juryo [十両] or above) from Takekuma Stable soon.
