本日 (令和3年 [2021年] 7月10日 [土曜日]) のNHK総合テレビの幕内相撲解説は、正面が元第71代横綱鶴竜 (かくりゅう) の鶴竜親方、向正面が元関脇寺尾 (てらお) の錣山 (しころやま) 親方でした。
Today (Saturday, July 10, Reiwa 3 [2021]), the commentators in NHK General TV's live sumo coverage were Kakuryu Oyakata (鶴竜親方), who is former Yokozuna Kakuryu (the 71st yokozuna) (元第71代横綱鶴竜), on the shomen side (正面: the side of the dohyo where the gyoji [行司: referee] stands before each bout), and Shikoroyama Oyakata (錣山親方), who is former Sekiwake Terao (元関脇寺尾; "Sekiwake" is the third highest rank for rikishi), on the mukojomen side (向正面: the side opposite the shomen side).
この二人の組み合わせは良かったです。鶴竜親方は温厚な人格者という感じである一方で、錣山親方は相撲の技術に関して分かりやすく的確な説明をしていました。
These two oyakata made a good team as commentators. While Kakuryu Oyakata seemed like a considerate and warm person of character, Shikoroyama Oyakata made easy-to-understand and approriate comments on sumo techniques.
お二人とも昔は井筒 (いづつ) 部屋に所属しており、錣山親方は鶴竜親方より遥かに兄弟子 (あにでし: 同じ相撲部屋に先に入門した人) です。しかし、力士としての現役時代の最高位は鶴竜親方が横綱、錣山親方が関脇なので、最高位の高い人のほうが正面の解説を担当するのがNHKとしての習慣になっているようです。
Both oyakata belonged to Izutsu Stable (井筒部屋) when they were active rikishi. Shikoroyama Oyakata is many years Kakuryu Oyakata's senior at the stable (兄弟子: one who entered the same sumo stable prior to someone else). However, while Kakuryu Oyakata's highest rank as rikishi is yokozuna (横綱: the highest rank for rikishi), that of Shikoroyama Oyakata is sekiwake. In NHK's live TV sumo coverage, it is a custom to have an oyakata whose rank as rikishi is higher serve as commentator on the shomen side and another oyakata whose rikishi rank is lower as one on the mukojomen side.
