FAITHFUL HACHIKO
Hachiko was born in Akita in November 1923. He was brought to Tokyo in January 1924 and was kept by Mr. Eisaburo Ueno, who held the chair of professorship in the Department of Agri culture at the Imperial University. Mr. Ueno was very kind to Hachi and the dog reciprocated his kindness in such a way that they became bosom friends. When Hachi grew up he became a fine specimen on a large size Japanese Breed. He a fine creamy colored coat with pointed ears and curly tail standing 2 feet and weighing 92 pounds.
It was Hachi’s custom to accompany his master every morning wet or fine, to the Shibuya Station and wait for his return in the afternoon when the master and dog would come home together happily. This friendship lasted until one day in May 1925.
On that day Hachi saw his master disappear among the crowd in the usual way at Shibuya Station, but that was the last he saw at him for the master was taken ill while at work and died before.
The sad event occurred when Hachi was just over in months old but Hachi never forgot his master.
Hachi went carry after that to the Shibuya Station, apparently in the hope of finding Mr. Ueno. Sometimes he would stay there for several days without returning home at all.
This patient search lasted until March in 1935, when Hachi died on the very spot Where he saw his master last.
However even before Hachi’s death, people who saw the patience sure of this faithful creature rowing old day by day were so, deeply moved by the sight that decided to erect a statue in memory of this noble animal.
In April 1934 a beautiful bronze statue executed by the famous sculptor Mr. Ando Teru was erected in in front of the Shibuya Station.
But in 1945, this statue was regrettable take a down on order of the Army and war last, melt down for using making war weapons.
Soon after the end of the war, plan for recreating the statue was contracted and it was then decided to artist be making at the new statue to Mr. Ando Takeshi son of Mr. Ando Teru who was un fortunately killed in one on the air raid during the war.
The new statue is similar size and shape to the old one, and it was no doubt be instrumental in perpetuating the sweet memory of faithful Hachiko.

忠実なハチ公
ハチ公は1923年11月に秋田県で生まれました。1924年1月に上京し、帝国大学農学科教授の上野栄三郎氏に引き取られました。上野さんはハチにとても親切で、犬は彼の親切に報いるように、彼らは親友になりました。ハチが成長したとき、彼は大型の日本の品種の素晴らしい標本になりました. 彼は、先のとがった耳と巻き毛の尾を持つ上質なクリーム色のコートで、2フィートに立って、体重は92ポンドです。
毎朝、濡れても晴れても主人に付き添って渋谷駅まで行き、午後には主人と犬が一緒に幸せに帰ってくるのを待つのがハチの習慣でした。 この友情は1925年5月のある日まで続きました。
その日、ハチは渋谷駅でいつものように主人が人混みの中に消えていくのを見たが、主人は仕事中に病気になり、以前に亡くなっていたので、それが彼を見た最後となりました。
悲しい出来事は、ハチが生後数か月で終わったときに起こりましたが、ハチは決して主人を忘れませんでした。
その後、ハチは上野さんを捜しに渋谷駅まで足を運びました。 （実際はともかく）見たところでは、上野さんを捜すことを望んでいるようでした。時には家に帰らずに数日間滞在することもありました。
この忍耐の捜索は 1935 年 3 月まで続き、ハチは主人と最後に会ったまさにその場で亡くなりました。
しかし、ハチが亡くなる前から、この忠実な生き物の忍耐力を見ていた人々は、その光景に深く感動し、日毎に騒ぎになって、この尊い動物を記念して彫像を建てることに決めました。
1934年4月、有名な彫刻家、安藤照（てる）氏によって制作された美しいブロンズ像が渋谷駅前に建てられました。
しかし、1945年、この銅像は残念なことに軍の命令により取り壊され、戦争の終わり、兵器を作るのに使用されるために解体されました。
終戦後まもなく、像の再建計画が締結され、戦争中空襲で不運にも死亡した安藤照（てる）氏の息子で彫刻家である安藤士（たけし）氏に新しい像を作成することが決定されました。
新しい像は古いハチ公像と似たような大きさと形をしており、それは疑いもなく忠実なハチ公の美しい記憶に、永久的に貢献するのです。
ハチ公像再建の会メンバーによる建立
1948年8月15日
◎上野英三郎さんは１９２５年５月２１日に亡くなられている。ハチは１９２４年の１月に上野さんに引き取られています。飼っていた期間がとても短かったのですね。
◎ハチ公像の第一作目を作成した安藤照（てる）さんは、昭和２０年５月の東京大空襲で亡くなられました。享年５４歳
現在渋谷の広場に建っているハチ公像は安藤照さんの子息であられる安藤士（たけし）さんによって作成されました。安藤士さんは２０１９年に９５歳で亡くなられました。
渋谷のハチ公前で去年の１１月頃から看板持ちをしながら、この🐕🦺犬の像に立っていると“何か”が出てくると期待して待っていました。これか、と納得です。
ハチ公像の後ろにある石碑の長い英文を記録して、グーグル翻訳してみようと試してみました。この石碑には昔、ペンキをかけられた跡が感じられます。古すぎる石碑の英文のスペルを判読できるのかなと半信半疑でチャレンジしてみました。
