申し訳ないが、私は皇帝になどなりたくない。
I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone.
I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white.
私には関わりのないことだ。誰も支配も征服もしたくない。
できれることなら皆を助けたい、ユダヤ人も、ユダヤ人以外も、黒人も、白人も。
We all want to help one another, human beings are like that.私たちは皆、助け合いたいのだ。人間とはそういうものなんだ。
We all want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery.
私たちは皆、他人の不幸ではなく、お互いの幸福と寄り添って生きたいのだ。
We don’t want to hate and despise one another.
私たちは憎み合ったり、見下し合ったりなどしたくないのだ。
In this world there is room for everyone and the earth is rich and can provide for everyone.この世界には、全人類が暮らせるだけの場所があり、大地は豊かで、皆に恵みを与えてくれる。
The way of life can be free and beautiful.
人生の生き方は自由で美しい。
But we have lost the way.Greed has poisoned men’s souls ?
has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.
しかし、私たちは生き方を見失ってしまったのだ。
欲が人の魂を毒し、憎しみと共に世界を閉鎖し、不幸、惨劇へと私たちを行進させた。
We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in,
machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
私たちはスピードを開発したが、それによって自分自身を孤立させた。
ゆとりを与えてくれる機械により、貧困を作り上げた。
Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind.知識は私たちを皮肉にし、知恵は私たちを冷たく、薄情にした。
We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity, More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.
私たちは考え過ぎで、感じなく過ぎる。機械よりも、私たちには人類愛が必要なのだ。
賢さよりも、優しさや思いやりが必要なのだ。そういう感情なしには、世の中は暴力で満ち、全てが失われてしまう。
The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together.飛行機やラジオが私たちの距離を縮めてくれた。
The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men,
cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all.
そんな発明の本質は人間の良心に呼びかけ、世界がひとつになることを呼びかける。
Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world,
millions of despairing men, women and little children,
victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.
今も、私の声は世界中の何百万人もの人々のもとに、
絶望した男性達、女性達、子供達、罪のない人達を拷問し、
投獄する組織の犠牲者のもとに届いている。
To those who can hear me I say “Do not despair”.私の声が聞こえる人達に言う、「絶望してはいけない」。
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed,
the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress.
私たちに覆いかぶさっている不幸は、単に過ぎ去る欲であり、人間の進歩を恐れる者の嫌悪なのだ。
the hate of men will pass and dictators die and the power they took from the people,
will return to the people and so long as men die [now] liberty will never perish…
憎しみは消え去り、独裁者たちは死に絶え、人々から奪いとられた権力は、人々のもとに返されるだろう。
決して人間が永遠には生きることがないように、自由も滅びることもない。
