ドナルド・トランプ次期米大統領が米国民の人気を集め、期待される理由に、タブーや批判を恐れない性格がある。
One reason that the next U.S. President Donald Trump was able to garner the enthusiasm and support of the U.S. people was because he didn’t fear braking taboos and engaging in criticism.

 


軍事ジャーナリストの井上和彦氏は、先日共演した番組で、トランプ氏のことを、アンデルセン童話『裸の王様』で、「王様は裸だ！」と指摘した純真無垢な子供のようだと評した。
During a recent program in which we appeared together, military commentator Kazuhiko Inoue commented that Trump was like the innocent child in the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes” who exclaimed “The Emperor is naked!”

 


大人になると言えなくなる本音を、トランプ氏はタブーを気にせず次々に言ってしまう。オバマ政権下で強化されたポリティカル・コレクトネス（政治的公正さ）にうんざりしていた米国民は、トランプ氏の歯にきぬ着せぬ発言を聞くと、気分がスカッとする。ビートたけし氏の本音トークのようなイメージである。
Without any regard for taboos, Trump expresses the true feelings which most people cannot express once they become an adult. When they hear Trump’s frank and outspoken criticisms, the American people who have had it up to here with the political correctness which was forced upon them during the Obama administration feel liberated. This is like the frank and outspoken statements made by Beat Takeshi.

 


「炎上商法」と揶揄（やゆ）する人もいるが、すでに素晴らしい波及効果を生んでいる。
There are those who mock this as “grandstanding,” but it has already had a significant ripple effect.

 


中華人民共和国（ＰＲＣ）と、中華民国（台湾）は、誰がどう見ても別々の国だが、ＰＲＣは、台湾を「１つの中国」の不可分な領土だと主張する。
Although by any kind of reasonable observation, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (Taiwan) are separate countries, the PRC insists that Taiwan is an integral part of “One China.”

 

 

現実や歴史を冷静に見れば、ＰＲＣの主張はメンツを保つためのウソだと分かる。しかし、このウソを「その通りですね」と認める国としか、ＰＲＣは国交を結ばない。
The PRC’s position is a lie to save face as can be seen by a cool-headed look at history and the current reality. However, the PRC only maintains diplomatic relations with countries which accept this lie as the truth.

 


ＰＲＣの巨大市場で利益を上げたい米国は、このウソに付き合って、台湾との国交を断絶した。さらに台湾を正式な国として扱わないことを１９７９年に約束した。以来、米台首脳は３６年以上も直接対話をしなかった。
America, which wants to profit from the enormous Chinese market, went along with this lie and severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan. In addition, it agreed in 1979 not to formally treat Taiwan as a country. During the 36 years since then, there have been no direct conversations between the leaders of the U.S. and Taiwan.

 


しかし、トランプ氏は、長年の慣例を破り、台湾の蔡英文総統の当選祝いの電話に出て、直接対話をした。そのうえ、「貿易などで（中国と）合意できなければ、なぜ『１つの中国』に縛られる必要があるのか」と、これまた本音をブチまけた。
However, Trump broke the long precedent by answering a congratulatory telephone call from President Tsai Ing-wen and speaking with her directly. In addition, he laid it bare by proclaiming “Why should the U.S. be bound by ‘One China’ if they don’t agree on trade issues?”

 


またもＰＲＣはメンツを潰されたわけだが、トランプ氏は台湾に限らず、チベットやウイグルの問題についても、今までにない対応を取るかもしれない。今から楽しみだ。
The PRC lost face once again, but Trump may also deal with not only Taiwan but also the Tibet and Uighur problems in unprecedented fashion. This is something to look forward to.

 


選挙中に言った「米国は日本を守るのに日本は米国を守らない。不公平だ！」という趣旨の発言も、戦後の日米関係のタブーを打ち破るものだった。お陰さまで、日本は自主防衛の重要性を思い出し、７０年間もタブー視された憲法第９条改正が現実味を帯びてきた。
His statement during the presidential campaign to the effect that “The U.S. must defend Japan, but Japan doesn’t need to defend the U.S. That’s unfair!” also broke the taboos about post-war U.S.-Japan relations. For better or worse, a realization of the importance of Japan’s self-reliant defense and the amendment of Article 9 of the Constitution have taken on a new sense of urgency.

 


先日出演したテレビ朝日系「朝まで生テレビ！」や、読売テレビ系「そこまで言って委員会ＮＰ」などは、９条改正を正面から取り上げた。出演者の大半が、９条改正に賛成した。
The issue of amending Article 9 of the Constitution was discussed when I appeared on “Live TV Until Morning” (TV Asahi) and “Soko Made Itte Iinkai NP” (Yomiuri TV) recently, and almost all of the participants were in favor amending Article 9.

 


第２次世界大戦の戦勝国のために作られた戦後体制は、終戦から７１年を経て深刻な制度疲労を起こしている。もはや一度取り壊して、作り直すしかない。２０１７年は、その第一歩となりそうだ。
The post-war regime which was set up after World War II by and for the victorious countries is now, after 71 years, in serious structural fatigue. It must be dismantled and restructured. 2017 will be the first step toward that goal.
