【ニッポンの新常識】Common Knowledge Revisited 69

On May 27th, President Obama was the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima, the site of the atomic bombing. The news of this historic visit drew the attention the world, but for some reason it overshadowed another speech which he delivered on the same day to U.S. military and Japanese Self-Defense Forces troops at Iwakuni Base (in Yamaguchi Prefecture).

 日米同盟の重要性や、安倍晋三首相の外交手腕がよく分かる内容だ。「偏向メディアはわざと無視したの?」と勘ぐりたくなる。一部を抜粋して紹介する。
The content makes clear the importance of the U.S.-Japan military alliance and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s diplomatic talent. It leads me to suspect that the biased media deliberately ignored it. Here are a few excerpts.

“The United States is leading again in the Asia Pacific, because this region is vital to our shared security and prosperity. And that takes security cooperation. It takes trade agreements. It takes relationships built between people. And it takes the proud service of our men and women in uniform throughout the region, working with our outstanding men and women who serve the armed forces of Japan.”

“[O]ur two nations -- former adversaries – [became not] just . . . partners, but . . . the best of friends and the strongest of allies. This base is a powerful example of the trust and the cooperation and the friendship between the United States and Japan, American Marines working side-by-side with Japanese Self-Defense Forces to protect the peace. [B]ecause of your service, our shared commitment to human dignity and freedom will endure, and this region will prosper. And we will continue to spread hope wherever we travel.”

Prime Minister Abe visited the United States in April and spoke to both houses of Congress about the “Alliance of Hope.” He promised approval of the TPP agreement and revisions to the national security laws. And several months later he delivered on his promises. He was as good as his word.

President Obama’s speech at Iwakuni Base was without doubt a clear positive response to Prime Minister Abe’s speech to Congress. If the media cannot understand the value of this, then that itself is a problem, but if the media intentionally ignored it, then that is an even bigger problem.

 The speech continues.

“American Marines working side-by-side with Japanese Self-Defense Forces [have worked] to protect the peace and engage with our partners throughout the region, and assist with humanitarian aid and disaster relief. You’ve responded to flooding in the Philippines and in Thailand. You've responded to devastating cyclones in Bangladesh. You played a critical role in relief efforts following the 2011 earthquake and the tsunami here in Japan. So, together, you have saved countless lives across the region. And we could not be prouder of that.”

“Your service . . . is rooted in the shared values of today's Japan and today's United States: the values of freedom, the values of democracy, the values of human rights, the values of rule of law. And as a result, our alliance hasn’t just been essential to the security of our two countries. It’s an indispensable source of stability and a foundation for prosperity in this region and around the world. You are the foundation for our quality of life.”

The U.S. military and the self-defense forces exist not just to protect against the attacks of adversaries. They also exist to mutually protect peace and stability in this region which is especially prone to natural disasters.

Demonstrators in front of bases in Okinawa intone “Out with the U.S. military!” One can only assume that their intention is to undermine Asian and world peace.
