Trump and Shigetada Kishii: Nerve to Voice Delusions in Public Incomprehensible
Common Knowledge Revisited 60
My appraisal of real estate mogul Donald Trump, the front runner in the contest for the Republican nomination in the U.S. presidential election, has changed recently. That does not mean that I support this “hopeless narcissist” who is not embarrassed by his ignorant delusions and prejudices and does not listen to the opinions or advice of anyone else.
I have come to hope that his inane comments may unwittingly serve to awaken from their trance the Japanese “heiwa boke” (people who are under the illusion that peace will continue forever without anyone having to do anything to preserve it).
In addition to his customary assertion that “the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty is unfair,” Trump has started saying that “withdrawal of U.S. forces from Japan is acceptable” or that “Japan should have their own nuclear weapons if they are needed for defense.”
In the event that U.S. troops withdrew from Japan and Japan was still constrained by Article 9 of the Constitution, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) would definitely try to take over not only the Senkaku Islands, but Okinawa itself. And it would probably consider eventually dominating all of Japan, with its modern infrastructure and hard-working excellent populace.
Those who reject this worst case scenario as “impossible” are either “heiwa boke,” who turn their eyes from the reality of history, or else they are enemy agents.

The Security Laws which went into effect this week are the result of efforts to improve the lopsided U.S.-Japan security arrangement which Trump says is “unfair” and make it at least a little more even, and to strengthen the trust and ties between the U.S. and Japan.
If these security laws were to be overturned, trust between Japan and the United States would be severely damaged -- just what the PRC has been hoping and working for. Any journalist should be able to envision this problem, but news coverage of this point has been scant.
Speaking of journalists, in regards to Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Sanae Takaichi’s so-called “license cancellation” statement, the journalists who protested by holding up a banner reading “We Are Angry!” held a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club on March 24th. It was confirmed again that they are merely venting their feelings, with factual understanding and legal reasoning being of secondary importance.
The fact that Mainichi Newspaper Special Editorial Board member Shigetada Kishii honestly said that “I have not experienced any pressure from the government either directly or indirectly” is to be praised. However, their spreading of the “delusion” that our “Association of Audiences Seeking Adherence to the Broadcast Law” is an organization operating at the behest of the government is extremely troubling.
As in the case of Mr. Trump, I find their nerve in voicing their delusions in public incomprehensible. However, we do not call them [as they did us] “vulgar, without any hint of character or intellect.” That is because it may constitute the crime of defamation or libel.
We of the “Association of Audiences” will be holding our third press conference on the afternoon of April 1. Readers of this column may be able to recognize anew the reality that Japanese journalism is not functioning normally.
