On October 22 last week, the winners of the “Eighth APA Japan Reconstruction Foundation ‘True Modern History’ Essay Contest” were announced, and I won the top “Seishi Fuji Award.”
Regarding my essay titled "The Influence of Japanese National Characteristics on Diplomacy and Defense," I quote from the Fuji Evening News report.
“Gilbert points out that while the level of Japanese sincerity, discipline, and consideration for others is ‘overwhelmingly high by international standards,’ these national characteristics comprise ‘the biggest obstacle faced in diplomacy, including military issues.’
“He argues that in light of the unfounded historical issues raised by the PRC and Korea, who espouse the philosophies of ‘take no thought for whether one's assertions are founded in historical fact’ or ‘no remorse for lies,’ Japan should cease the practice of ‘apology diplomacy.’”
I received many messages of congratulations and support for my position, which was very gratifying. On the other hand, a search of the internet turns up some criticism.
One would of course expect some critical words from supporters of China or Korea, but no one wrote anything like “Your comments are reprehensible in light of the fact that there are many reliable people in the Chinese communist party or the Korean government.” Rather, as usual, the criticism consisted of attempts at labeling such as “internet right winger,” and contempt or ridicule of me personally, other former recipients of this award, or the award itself.
Their all too stereotypical remarks were close to gut reflexes, showing that they were not yet used to using the cerebrum which humans obtained when they acquired the ability to walk on two legs. Could this be due to the intentional indoctrination carried out by the Japan Teacher’s Union after the war?
Since the root source of that was the War Guilt Information Program implemented and carried out by GHQ (General Headquarters of the Allied Forces), as an American I feel some responsibility.
However, this position of dismissing arguments at the outset without confirming the facts while living in modern Japan where correct information is readily available for the asking, as opposed to the situation in China or Korea, is total slothfulness.
Without paying any attention to historical changes, these people refuse to accept change even though they are aware of it, and try to drag down people who are seriously working to adapt to such change.
And, as in the past, or perhaps even more so than in the past, they look for an easy way to work their cunning. They lack any kind of morals or ethics.
“Labeling” and “victim business” are the stock in trade of lazy people. Irresponsible political parties which put forth no alternative policies but rather only oppose the policies of the government are sloths. They may be unable to forget their past successes, but their outmoded business model is no longer valid. Regrettably for them.
