APA Japan Restoration Foundation (Representative: Toshio Motoya) announced the winner of the eighth "True Modern History" essay contest on October 22.
The essay chosen for the Fuji Seishi Award (after Motoya's pen name) was "The Influence of Japanese National Characteristics on Diplomacy and Defense" by California attorney Kent Gilbert, whose regular column "Common Knowledge Revisited" runs in the Fuji Evening News on Fridays.
Gilbert points out that while the level of Japanese sincerity, discipline, and consideration for others is overwhelmingly high by international standards, these national characteristics comprise "the biggest obstacle faced in diplomacy, including military issues."
He argues that in light of the unfounded historical issues raised by the PRC and Korea, who espouse the philosophies of "take no thought for whether one's assertions are founded in historical fact" or "no remorse for lies,"
Japan should cease the practice of "apology diplomacy."
Regarding the judges' decision, Gilbert said, "I wrote this with a desire to have the Japanese 'wake up.' This is the first time I have won such an award, and I am thrilled."
