It is long (54 minutes), but for those of you who are interested in the upcoming celebration (or commemoration) of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, I can guarantee that you will find every minute of it fascinating. The only issue I have with this video is the statement that 75% of the U.S. bases in Japan are located in Okinawa. Almost all of the bases on the Japanese mainland are joint bases with the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, so perhaps 75% of the bases used exclusively by the U.S. military are indeed located on Okinawa. However, many bases in Okinawa have been returned, including Naha Air Base (which is now the Naha Airport and an air self-defense force base), the entire fukutoshin area of Naha, the American Village area of Chatan (which was formerly a marine airfield), the former Yomitan Communications Facility (including an airfield, which is now being redeveloped into schools and other public facilities), a golf course (which is now a huge mall), parts of Camp Foster and Camp Kuwae (which are in the process of return), half of Okuma (in northern Okinawa), Camp Lester (which is slated for return in the near future, facilitating the construction of the coastal highway along the west side of Okinawa, which will greatly alieve traffic congestion), a small portion of Kadena Air Base (which was returned for use as an expressway and some other major roads), and several smaller installations. And of course, the present plans call for the return of Futenma Air Station in Ginowan, to be replaced by a new facility on the Henoko district of Nago in northern Okinawa.
