The Secret Behind Japan’s Strength in Motor Sports
Certain Countries Should Realize the Recklessness of Challenging Japan
The Red Bull Air Race was held in Japan for the first time on May 16 and 17 at Makuhari in Chiba Prefecture. This is the pinnacle of world airplane racing using single-engine propeller planes flying one at a time in timed competition, and one of the mere 14 pilots chosen to participate is Yoshihide Muroya from Japan.

A review of the background of the participants shows that some were former ace pilots in the air force or pilots in military aerial acrobat teams. By contrast, Muroya started out as a member of the glider flying club at Chuo University and then struggled hard to work his way up to become an air race pilot.
Muroya came in 8th place at the Chiba Air Race, but he did record the fastest time. I think we can look forward to his delivering more dramatic performances.

Looking at Muroya’s background calls to mind racing driver Takuma Sato, who is presently competing in the U.S. Indycar Series.
Sato was a successful bicyclist until age 19, winning the national inter-high school competition. However, he couldn’t let go of his aspirations for Formula One which he had felt as an elementary school student watching the Suzuka Circuit, so he dropped out of Waseda University and moved into the world of four-wheeled racing.

In only five years he was able to advance high enough to become a Formula One driver where his highest record was a third-place visit to the winner’s podium. After moving to the Indycar Series, he has accomplished becoming the first Japanese to win a race. He is a fine young man with amicable good looks and speaking style, concealing a fierce fighting spirit second to none.
International motor sports could not operate without Japanese and Japanese companies.
The only company other than Japanese companies Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki to secure the top spot in two-wheel road racing since 1975 was Ducati (Italy) in 2007.
Honda is involved not only in two-wheel racing but also provides engines for Indycar and Formula One. Bridgestone continues to be the exclusive supplier of tires for Formula One and MotoGP and has raised the level of both. Indycar tires are provided by Firestone, a member of the Bridgestone group.
The motorsports competitors, suppliers and team staff are all highly ambitious and diligent hard workers. There is no room for imitators and copycats who want to slide by. All strive for victory through teamwork with a strong will and sense of responsibility, giving their maximum effort to the tasks assigned, and sharing each individual’s important know-how. It makes perfect sense for Japanese to be active in this field.
Victory or defeat is determined by talented people, technology, training, will power, and teamwork, the same as in war. In my interview in the June issue of “Voice” I said, “Japanese are very strong in the area of patience, but as a matter of fact they are even stronger when it comes to a fight.”
Certain countries should take a good look at motorsports and realize the recklessness of challenging Japan.
