先週木曜日から、米国ユタ州ソルトレイクシティーにあるソルトパレス・コンベンションセンターで行われた会合に参加していました。最終日である土曜日、朝８時３０分から始まる会合へと急いでいたとき、廊下の壁をふと見たら、作品を説明する案内板に気付いたのですが、そこに日本人らしき名前が載っていました。
Starting on Thursday last week, I have been participating in meetings at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. On Saturday morning, as I was hurrying to the first meeting which was to begin at 8:30 a.m., I took a look at the wall and happened to notice a plaque describing the art, which contained a Japanese-sounding name.

壁の作品は１，４６８枚ものセラミック板で作られたもので、クリエイターは日本生まれ、ネブラスカ州オマハ在住のジュン・カネコ氏（７３歳）です。製作費は２１万ドルで、コンテストで選ばれてソルトパレスに設置された５つの美術品の、総予算の約半分がこの作品に使われました。
The wall piece consists of 1,468 ceramic slabs, and the creator is 73-year-old Jun Kaneko, a Japanese-born artist living in Omaha, Nebraska. The work cost $210,000, which was about half of the total budget allocated for the five works chosen by open competition to be installed in the Salt Palace.

The creator explains his work as follows:
"The powerful nature of Salt Lake City, surrounded with horizontal fields of the Great Salt Lake and desert, and the vertical environment of the Wasatch Mountains, makes Salt Lake unique in its natural environment and drama. The energy of the sunlight mixing with the horizontal and vertical elements of nature makes me dream of patterns I have never thought of before.
"People in Salt Lake have strong ideals and hopes for mankind. Since its expansion the City grew up with a balance of nature and human dignity. I hope this visual presentation of ceramic tiles will create a powerful pattern to congratulate citizens and welcome visitors to the Salt Palace."


様々な分野で日系アメリカ人が活躍していることは知っていますが、美術方面にはとても弱い私にとって、土曜日の突然の出会いは大変勉強になりました。
I know Japanese Americans are very active in many fields, but this chance encounter on Saturday was very instructive for me since I am not well versed in the field of art.
