I Did Not Originate Taco Rice

先週土曜日（5/9）の靖国会館での講演内容を一部訂正します。本題の沖縄問題の話ではなくて(笑)、「タコライスは沖縄の郷土料理ではなく私が作った」と発言した部分です。
I need to correct one point that I made in my address at Yasukuni Kaikan last Saturday (May 9). I said in the address that Taco Rice is not a home-grown dish to Okinawa because I was the first to introduce it in Okinawa.
後で調べてみたら、タコライスは沖縄県金武町の「パーラー千里」と「キングタコス」というお店の創業者、儀保松三さんが米兵のために84年に考案したのだそうです。
When I checked later, I discovered claims that Shozo Giho, the founder of Parlor Senri and King Tacos in Kin Town, Okinawa Prefecture, introduced this dish in 1984.
ちなみに私が那覇市内にタコス専門店「タコタイム」をオープンし、メニューにタコライスを入れたのは87年です。少なくとも当時の那覇市内に、タコライスを出しているお店はまだ無かったと思います（私が知らないだけかも知れませんが…）。
I opened a taco restaurant called “Taco Time” in Naha in 1987, and the menu included Taco Rice. I don’t think there were any other restaurants selling Taco Rice in Naha at that time (but I could be wrong).
だから「私はタコライスを沖縄に広めることに貢献した」であれば、言っても良いのかな？ つまらないことで「歴史修正主義者」などと言われたくないので、早々に訂正しておきます。
So I guess it is only correct to say that I was “instrumental in popularizing Taco Rice in Okinawa.” I would hate to be called a historical revisionist over such an issue, so I am issuing this correction.
「元祖」、「本家」、「起源」、「オリジナル」、「考案者」などは、今後一切名乗りませんので、そちら方面の皆さまはご安心下さい。
I will never again claim to be the founder, originator, inventor, etc. of this product, so you can all rest easy.
人間、誰でも間違いはあります。私の場合は自分の間違いに気付いたら、さっさと認めることにしています。何十年も矛盾なく嘘をつき通せるほどの、天才的な頭脳は持っていませんから。
Everybody can make a mistake. In my case, I have found it is easiest to just recognize the error as soon as I discover it. I am not smart enough to be able to perpetuate a falsehood for decades on end.
皆さんも「今さら恥ずかしいから自分の間違いを認められない」などと考えない方が良いですよ。たとえ何千年言い続けても、間違いが真実になることはありません。
In fact, it is probably better for all of us to go ahead and admit our mistakes instead of worrying about being embarrassed. After all, a mistake will still be a mistake a thousand years from now.
悪あがきするほどに、恥の上塗りになると考えています。
Holding out just adds layers of embarrassment.
