If You Could Be Born Again
統計数理研究所が今年10月30日に「日本人の国民性 第13次全国調査」の結果を発表しました。そのなかで、私が興味深いと思った項目がいくつかありますが、今日は次の質問についてコメントしたいと思います。
On October 30th of this year, the Institute of Statistical Mathematics released its “13th Annual Study of National Characteristics.” I was deeply interested in several points, but I will discuss just one today.

もう一度生まれかわるとしたら、“日本に生まれてきたい”か、それとも“よその国に生まれてきたいか”を選んでもらったところ、“日本に”を選んだ人は、以前と比べて上昇しました。性・年齢層別に見ても、70歳代を除いてすべて上がっています。
When asked whether, if they could be born again, they would like to born in Japan or another country, the percentage of Japanese people answering “In Japan” increased over past surveys in every sex or age category except those 70 years of age or older.
昔はアメリカにあこがれたり、日本で行き詰ったりして、特に目的も無く海外留学する若者がたくさんいましたが、現在はそのような日本人の海外留学は減っています。つまり自分の国にも、十分なチャンスがあると考える若者が増えているのでしょう。
In the past a large number of young people went abroad to study in the United States without any particular goals in mind after reaching a dead end with their lives in Japan, but the number of such students studying abroad has decreased. I see this as an indication that more young people feel that there is sufficient chance for them to succeed in their own country.
事実、極めて例外的な数か国（あえて特定しません）を除けば、全世界にわたって、日本人、日本文化、そして日本という国は、過去のいつの時代と比べても、現在が最も高い評価を受けています。日本人が他国の文化をより深く理解するようになるにつれて、自国の文化に対する自信が増してきたと思います。
As a matter of fact, with the notable (but not-to-be-mentioned-here) exception of just a very few countries, Japanese people, Japanese culture, and Japan itself are more highly regarded around the world than ever before. And as their understanding of international cultures has increased, Japanese have gained increased confidence in their own culture.
従って私は、今回の調査結果は、日本人の正当で健全な「愛国心」の表れだと評価しています。これに付随する重要な効果として、自国文化に対する自信が増せば増すほど、日本人は世界の晴れ舞台で、もっと簡単に活躍できるようになるでしょう。
Thus, I believe these survey results are an indication of the entirely justifiable and healthy patriotism of the Japanese people. In addition and as an important side benefit, the stronger the confidence Japanese people have in their own culture, the easier it becomes for them to succeed on the world stage.
世界平和を心の底から望む人であれば、まずは自分の国を愛することが必要不可欠だと私は考えています。
I think it is essential for people who truly desire world peace to have a love for their own country.
