彼らがふもとに着くと、大ぜいの群衆が待ちかまえていました。その時、一人の男が駆け寄り、イエスの前にひざまずいて叫びました。
When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him.

「先生。息子をあわれと思ってお助けください。ひどいてんかん持ちで、火の中でも水の中でも、おかまいなしに倒れるのです。
“Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.

それで、お弟子さんたちのところに連れて来てお願いしたのですが、だめでした。」
I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”
17
「ああ、なんと不信仰な人たちでしょう。いったいいつまで、あなたがたのことを我慢しなければならないのですか。さあ、その子をここに連れて来なさい。」
“You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.”

イエスがこう言って、その子に取りついている悪霊をおしかりになると、悪霊は出て行き、子どもはその場ですっかり治ってしまいました。
Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.

あとで弟子たちは、そっとイエスに尋ねました。「どうして、私たちには悪霊が追い出せなかったのでしょう。」
Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

イエスはお答えになりました。「信仰が足りないからです。もしあなたがたに小さなからし種ほどの信仰があったら、この山に向かって『動け』と言えば、そのとおり山は動くのです。何でもできないことはありません。
He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

ただし、こういった悪霊は、祈りと断食によらなければ、とても追い出せないのです。」
22
まだガリラヤにいたある日のこと、イエスはこんなことをお話しになりました。「わたしは裏切られ、人々の手に引き渡され、殺されますが、三日目には必ず復活します。」
When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.

これを聞いて、弟子たちの心は悲しみと恐れとで、いっぱいになりました。
They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.” And the disciples were filled with grief.

カペナウムに着いた時、神殿に納める税金を取り立てる役人がペテロのところへ来て、「あなたがたの先生は税金を納めないのか」と尋ねました。
After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay
25 「もちろん、納めますとも。」こう答えると、ペテロは急いで家に入り、このことを話そうとしました。ところがまだ話を切り出さないうちに、イエスのほうからお尋ねになりました。「ペテロ。あなたはどう思いますか。世の王たちは、だれから税を取り立てるでしょうか。自分の子どもたちからですか、それとも、ほかの人たちからですか。」
“Yes, he does,” he replied.
When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?”
26 「ほかの人たちからです」とペテロは答えました。「では、王の子どもたちは税金を納める必要はないのです。 27 しかし、役人たちを怒らせたくはありません。今から湖へ行って、つり糸をたらしてみなさい。最初につれた魚の口から、わたしたち二人分の税金を払うだけのお金が見つかるはずです。それで払いなさい。」
“From others,” Peter answered.
“Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him. 27 “But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”
