７月２０日、海の日。
大海原へ漕ぎ出してゆく、希望に満ちたおおらかな曲を、
僕の好きなアーティストから３曲、選んでみました。
今回は、自分自身の再出発に向けての、エールの意味合いも込めて。
元気を出して、前を向いて、大きく帆を張って・・・。
「アメリカ」は、７０年代前半を中心に、長年３人組で活動してきたグループでした。
「名前のない馬」でデビューし、その後も順調に 「ヴェンチュラ・ハイウェイ」、「シンプルライフ」、
「金色の髪の少女」、「ひなぎくのジェーン」 など、ヒット曲を発表しました。
アルバムも、「金色の髪の少女」を含む 「HEART」 で頂点を迎えますが、
その後は少し停滞しはじめた感があって、ファンとしては心配していました。
そんな時期に発表された 「HARBOR」 というアルバムは、大ヒット曲こそなかったものの、
アルバムとしての完成度は高く、今でも夏になると聴きたくなる、大好きな１枚となりました。
ジャケットやアルバム名からも分かる通り、「海」をテーマにした作品ですが、
今回紹介する 「Down to the Water」 は、そのラストに収録されていた曲でした。
３人のハーモニーと波の音でフェードアウトして、このアルバムは幕を閉じます。
デビュー以来、３人の作品には、「America(Horse with no name)」、「HOMECOMING」、
「HATTRICK」、「HOLIDAY」、「HEART」、「HIDEAWAY」 と、 「H」のイニシャルが付けられていましたが、
それも、このアルバムが最後となりました。
そして、その後間も無く３人は、進む道を分かち、ダン・ピークがソロとなり、
アメリカは残る２人で活動を続けました。
「HARBOR」 を聴くと、彼らの友情と結束、
そして別れ・新たな道への決意が光を放った、最後の秀作であったと感じます。

友人でもある海洋冒険家、ジャック・クストー氏の 「カリプソ号」 と彼の偉業をを讃えた曲でした。
このYouTube映像も、ダイナミックかつ爽やかな大海原を行くカリプソ号と
クストー氏の活動を伝えています。
ジョンにとってもまた、この曲を収めた 「WINDSONG」 が、キャリアの頂点であったと思います。
のびやかな歌声が夏に心地よい曲です。
若大将・加山雄三 さんの名曲 「光進丸」 「海・その愛」 にも通じる海への愛を感じます。

日本語タイトルのセンスはともかく、この曲もまた、海の雄大さを感じさせる曲です。
訳詞を探しましたが、なかなか見つからず、もどかしい思いです。
恐らくは、アメリカの北東に位置するメイン州にある、
とある入り江（港）での風景や人間愛のようなものを歌っているのだと思われますが、
いかんせん、自分の英語力の無さが悔やまれます。
他の２曲同様、曲と英語の歌詞を眺めて、想像力に任せて、感じる事にしましょう・・・。
