SANTA CRUZ -- Beautiful weather greeted thousands of athletes at the Santa Cruz 10k and Half Marathon on Sunday, both beginning at Cowell Beach.

The races started at 8 a.m. with 10k runners headed toward Natural Bridges and half marathon runners set out for Wilder Ranch State Park -- a 13.1 mile run after doubling back to the finish line.

Martinez's Alli Bigelow, 35, took first in the women's half marathon division in 1 hour, 26 minutes and 20 seconds. While she was happy to win, Bigelow said she most enjoyed the views offered by West Cliff Drive.

"It's a tough course, but a gorgeous course. I normally just run on a treadmill," Bigelow said.

Lauren Harrison from Sunnyvale took first place in the women's 10k division with a time of 36 minutes, 46 seconds.

Cody Lemons of Sacramento was ecstatic after winning the men's half marathon in 1:14:36. He already knew how he was going to celebrate, and it wasn't going to be by relaxing in the sunshine.

"This is my first win since high school at John F. Kennedy. I gotta start training for my next marathon!" said Lemons, 23, who will run in the San Diego Rock n' Roll Marathon next month.

Other runners were eager to get the running out of the way so they could beat the heat. Race organizers said 80-90 people may be disqualified for starting 20 minutes early.
