We made our Christmas cake at home again this year.
I sometimes think it might be easier to just buy one, but my kids always say,
“I want to make it!”
So we do.
Also, since I work a relaxed part-time schedule about two or three days a week,
being mindful about saving money is important to us.
I was curious how much it would cost this year, so I added everything up:
-
Sponge cake: about ¥100
-
Fresh cream: about ¥400 (this is where we splurge a little)
-
Strawberries: about ¥650
-
Kiwi: about ¥100
-
Chocolate pen: about ¥130
In total, it came to around ¥1,380.
It’s an 18-centimeter cake.
When you make it at home, you can use really good fresh cream and enjoy lots of strawberries.
That alone makes it worth it.
It makes me feel happy.
Another thing that makes me smile is that, little by little each year, my kids and I are getting better at making cakes together.
Spreading the cream evenly—apparently it’s called “nappage.”
Of course, it never looks like a professional cake, but there’s always a moment when we say,
“Oh! We’re better than last year!”
and feel quietly proud.
We made the cake yesterday so the sponge and cream could settle nicely together.
Tonight, we’re going to enjoy it as a family.
