アマゾンから本が届きました。
パルマー（Adrew Palmer）のEncounters with British Composers（The Boydell Press, 2015）です。
英国の現代音楽作曲家39人へのインタビュー集。
その中には、バートウィッスル、ホロウェイ、ナッセン、マクミランといった有名作曲家も。
一方、アデス、ターネジのインタビューがないのは残念。
音楽家のインタビュー集で面白かったのは、指揮者６人のインタビューを纏めた、サービス（Tom Service）のMusic as Alchemy（Faber & Faber, 2012）という本。
バンベルク響時代のノット監督のインタビューも入ってます。
さて、パルマー本のこと。
今時のクラシックの作曲家は一体何を考えて作曲しているのか、という単純な好奇心で買いました。
敬愛するナッセン（2018年７月に急逝）のインタビューを眺めていたら、次の言葉が目に留まりました。
“I don't have any particular philosophy about what my music is or isn't. I certainly don't set out to express myself, and I find that idea repellent, actually. ... Of course, I hope that the resulting music is expressive, but that's something that should happen of its own accord.”（p.262）
“I really believe that the worst imaginable narcissism would be try to write what you think your music ought to be like - surely that would be a recipe for redundancy.”（p.268）
ナッセンらしい実に味わい深い言葉だ。
この手の本は、気になる人から摘まみ食い的に読めるのが良い。
