The important minerals to focus on are zinc and iron.

 

Zinc is known as an essential mineral for metabolism. It is indispensable for the active cell division of hair matrix cells. The recommended daily intake of zinc is 11.0 mg for adult men and 8.0 mg for adult women (source: Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, "Dietary Reference Intakes for Japanese (2020)"). Zinc is one of the minerals that Japanese people tend to lack, with the daily intake for adult men being 9.2 mg and for adult women 7.7 mg (source: Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, "National Health and Nutrition Survey 2019").

People who consume alcohol need to be especially cautious about zinc deficiency. Alcohol is metabolized by enzymes in the liver, a process that depletes zinc. Therefore, excessive alcohol consumption can lead to a loss of zinc. It's important to drink alcohol in moderation.

Zinc can be found in oysters, anchovies, beef, Parmesan cheese, matcha, almonds, and other foods. Make an effort to include these in your diet.

Lastly, let's talk about iron. Iron is a component of hemoglobin in red blood cells, which transports oxygen. Hemoglobin is a combination of protein and iron. Both hair papilla cells and hair matrix cells, which promote hair growth, require oxygen. No matter how deeply you breathe, if you lack iron, hemoglobin activity decreases, limiting oxygen supply and potentially hindering the activity of hair papilla cells and hair matrix cells. Symptoms like fatigue, difficulty recovering from tiredness, and shortness of breath when climbing stairs may indicate a hidden iron deficiency (latent iron deficiency anemia). Increase your intake of iron through seaweed such as nori, shellfish like clams and oysters, ayu (sweetfish), anchovies, and liver.

As a special mention, let’s introduce a familiar Japanese food that might help with hair growth: wasabi. The rhizome of true wasabi contains a phytochemical called hexaphenyl (6-MITC). Phytochemicals are beneficial compounds produced by plants, such as catechins in tea and anthocyanins in red wine. According to research by Kinjin, a pioneer in wasabi products, hexaphenyl has hair growth-promoting properties. To benefit from the hair growth effects of wasabi, use freshly grated true wasabi when eating sashimi and other dishes. The wasabi in room-temperature tubes often contains little of the rhizome and is mostly made up of western wasabi (horseradish), thus offering limited hair growth benefits.
