Comparing FUT and FUE 2: Graft Extraction Quantity and Efficiency

While it is ideal to transplant 100% of the extracted grafts, losses occur for various reasons, making it challenging to achieve a 100% transplantation rate. No matter how many grafts are harvested, a high loss rate is wasteful. Traditionally, the loss rate in FUE was considered higher than in FUT. The reason for the higher loss rate in FUE is that the direction of visible hair shafts (hair stems) on the scalp may not necessarily align with the direction beneath the skin. Attempting to extract grafts using a punch needle based on the direction of hair shafts, when the direction beneath the skin is misaligned, can potentially damage valuable grafts.

Grafts are delicate, and if they get damaged, they may become unsuitable for transplantation or may not grow normally even if transplanted, posing a risk. To address these weaknesses in FUE, our clinic employs the following strategies. After harvesting the first 2-3 grafts, we pause to carefully check for any losses due to cutting or other factors. If there are any cut-offs, adjustments are made to the rotation speed of the punch needle's motor (the punch needle rotates using a motor) and the direction (insertion angle) it enters the skin. This process of checking is repeated for the next 2-3 grafts, aiming to minimize the loss rate. Lowering the motor's rotation speed provides feedback when a cut-off occurs.

We also put effort into refining the tools used for extraction and consistently incorporate the latest technology. The punch needle we currently use in our clinic features three behavior modes: 1) Rotation, 2) Oscillation, and 3) Vibration, each with finely adjustable settings for duration, angle, and intensity via a touch panel. This allows for meticulous customization tailored to each patient. Through these various innovations, our clinic boasts a high extraction rate exceeding industry standards, ranging from 95% to 98%.
