There's a new option available called autologous hair transplantation.
For patients struggling with male pattern baldness, effective treatments such as finasteride and minoxidil have emerged. While some patients are satisfied with the results of these pharmacological treatments, others are not.
Those who are dealing with advanced hair loss and wish to regain a volume of hair similar to what they had before, or those who want to increase their hair density in a shorter period, might find that pharmacological treatments alone are insufficient. For patients who are not 100% satisfied with pharmacological treatments, our clinic suggests autologous hair transplantation (hair transplantation).
With autologous hair transplantation, the hair in the thinning areas begins to grow strongly again, and the effects are semi-permanent. The Japanese Dermatological Association's "Guidelines for the Treatment of Male and Female Pattern Hair Loss, 2017 edition" also states that for cases where the effects of finasteride or dutasteride taken orally, or minoxidil applied topically are not sufficient, "it is recommended to perform autologous hair transplantation for male pattern baldness.
Autologous hair transplantation may also be performed for female pattern hair loss" (this comes with a note that it is limited to cases where no other options are available, and performed by physicians with sufficient experience and skill).
The recommendation level is B (recommended) for male pattern baldness and C1 (may be performed) for female pattern baldness.
