The mechanism by which finasteride is effective is as follows: The onset of androgenetic alopecia is due to 5α-reductase converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT inhibits the function of hair follicle cells, leading to hair loss and thinning.
Finasteride works by inhibiting the activity of 5α-reductase, thus preventing the synthesis of DHT from testosterone, and consequently preventing androgenetic alopecia. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) occurs through a similar mechanism as androgenetic alopecia, where DHT synthesized by 5α-reductase within the prostate causes cell proliferation, leading to enlargement. Therefore, finasteride can also suppress prostate enlargement. The medication used for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia contains 1.0 mg of finasteride per tablet, while the medication used for the treatment of BPH contains 5.0 mg of finasteride per tablet, which is five times the amount.
