コロナウイルス流行のなかでコロナウイルスから回復した人やその家族やなどがstigmaに直面している、という共同ニュースの記事のタイトル。
記事は、

彼らはstigmaに直面したりや差別的な扱いをつけている、これはらい病(leprosy)や原子力発電所の事故(nuclear accidents)のときと同じだ、という内容。
stigmaとはなにか。
辞書を見てみると…新英和中辞典では「汚名、恥辱」、英辞郎では、「〔社会的な〕烙印、汚名、不名誉のしるし」。だがこれだとややわかりにくい気がする。
英英辞典でみてみると、「a strong feeling of disapproval that most people in a society have about something, especially when this is unfair」とある。
より日常的な言い方をすると、「差別的な目で見られる」「偏見の目でみられる」くらいだろうか。
語源はというと…
1590s (earlier stigme, c. 1400), "mark made on skin by burning with a hot iron," from Latin stigma (plural stigmata), from Greek stigma (genitive stigmatos) "mark of a pointed instrument, puncture, tattoo-mark, brand," from root of stizein "to mark, tattoo," from PIE root *steig- "to stick; pointed" (see stick (v.)).
Figurative meaning "a mark of disgrace" in English is from 1610s. Stigmas "marks resembling the wounds on the body of Christ, appearing supernaturally on the bodies of the devout" is from 1630s; earlier stigmate (late 14c.), from Latin stigmata.
もともとはラテン語のstigmaで、これは肌に押される烙印のことを意味する。さらにはギリシャ語のstigmaに遡るという。
「スティグマ」というとアメリカの社会学者アーヴィング・ゴッフマンによる研究がとても有名で、Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity（『スティグマの社会学――烙印を押されたアイデンティティ』）という本がある。
新聞記者でこのゴッフマンのスティグマ概念を知らない人は多分いないはずで、このような新聞記事においてstigmaが用いられる場合にも背後にはゴッフマンのstigmaの概念が（薄っすらとでも）あるのでは、と思う。
