【あらまし】
秋になり、源氏は誰のせいでというわけでもなく、あれやこれやと心悩ましく、妻の左大臣邸へも途絶えがち。
妻方では、どうしたことかと恨みがましく思われています。
心づくしの秋は、六条辺りの女のところにも及んでいて、源氏の惑乱したような熱意にほだされてしまったものの、その後、意外にも、にわかに熱が冷めてしまったかのように夜離（よが）れるようになり、女は思うところしきりです。
ある霧深い明け方、源氏は女房に促されて、前栽（せむざい）の花の咲き乱れている中を出て行きます。
女は、男と濃密な夜を過ごして起きられず、頭だけをもたげて見送りました。
【本文】
秋にもなりぬ。人やりならず心づくしにおぼし乱るることどもありて、大殿には絶えま置きつつ、うらめしくのみ思ひきこえたまへり。

there he was, standing before all the colors of the garden as though he did not wish to miss their beauty. No, there was no one like him.
【語句の説明】
されど、よそなりし御心まどひのやうに、あながちなることはなきも、いかなることにかと見えたり：「それにしても、女が靡かなかったときの源氏の心を惑わすような一途さがないというのは、どういうことだろうか、とよそ目には思われた。」
ここの英訳、

（女に言い寄ったときの憑かれたような一途な想いがすっかりなくなってしまったのはどういうことだろうか。）
【余説】
六条辺りの女とは、六条御息所のこと。源氏より7つ年上の24歳。もと東宮妃で、東宮が早死にしなければ、后になっていた方でした。
この未亡人を、源氏は読者が知らない間に口説き落としたわけです。
自分のものにしたら、その他の一人、みたいな扱いされたら腹も立つでしょう。この方は趣味に教養に富んで、プライドも高く、夕顔の女とはおよそ正反対の女でした。
