There was a nice surprise waiting for me when I got home from work last Monday. My family all sat down together under the kotatsu, and when we turned the television on, my favorite band, Back Number, was performing a special 90 minute concert - which we could watch for free!!
月曜日に私が仕事から帰ってきた時、素敵なサプライズが待っていました。家族と一緒にこたつに入ってテレビをつけたら、私の大好きなバンド、バックナンバーは90分の特別なコンサートを行っていました！それに、無料で観られました！
They even played one of my favorite songs, "Tegami", which means "letter" in Japanese. "Tegami" was actually the first Back Number song I ever heard. The moment I heard "Tegami", I knew I would become a Back Number fan. I loved the simple, yet beautiful melody, and the smooth tone of the lead singer's voice. It sounded like a song from another era!
私の好きな曲の一つ、「手紙」という曲も歌ってくれました。実は、私が初めて聞いたバックナンバーの曲は「手紙」でした。「手紙」を聞いた瞬間に、「きっとこのバンドのファンになる！」と思いました。シンプルで美しいメロディーと歌手の穏やかな歌声が大好きでした。別の時代の曲のように聞こえました！
When I was studying Japanese in Canada, I had two dreams; one dream was to live and work in Japan after graduation, and the other dream was to go to a Back Number concert! When studying a foreign language, it is important to have a goal in mind. There were many times when I felt that Japanese was too difficult and I wanted to quit, but listening to Back Number's music inspired me to keep studying and never give up.
カナダで日本語を勉強していた時に、二つの夢がありました。一つ目は大学を卒業して、日本に引っ越して働くことです。二つ目はバックナンバーのライブを見に行くことです！外国語の勉強にはゴールや目標が非常に大切なことだと思います。日本語が難しくて辞めようと思ったことが何回もありましたが、バックナンバーの音楽を聴いて、インスピレーションを受けて、諦めずに勉強を続けました。
The theme song of my university years was a song called "Densha no mado kara" (which literally means, "from the window of the train"). The song's lyrics tell the story of someone who is taking a train to the place of his dreams (Tokyo perhaps?), but starts crying in spite of himself when he looks out the window and sees the view of his hometown pass by. For me, the place of my dreams was Japan. I did my very best to study Japanese in order to go to Japan, but it meant that I had to leave my friends and family, and my hometown behind. I can really relate to the bittersweet emotions of the narrator in this song.
「電車の窓から」という曲は私の大学生時代のテーマソングでした。曲の歌詞は主人公が電車に乗って憧れの場所（東京かな？）へ向かっていますが、電車の窓から生まれ育った町の景色を見て、思わずに涙が出るというストーリーになっています。私の場合は、その憧れの場所は日本でした。日本に行けるために、一生懸命に日本語を勉強していたが、その夢を実現させるには、カナダの家族と友達から離れて、生まれ育った町を去っていかないといけなかったです。一喜一憂する主人公の気持ちがよく分かります。
When I was a student in university, my teacher suggested I participate in a Japanese speech contest. Even though I didn't think my Japanese was good enough, I chose to participate because I thought it would be a good experience. Surprisingly, I won the speech contest! And the prize? A free trip to Japan!
大学生の頃、先生に「日本語弁論大会に参加してみませんか」と誘われました。私の日本語がそんなに上手ではないと思いながら、いい経験になるかもしれないと思って、参加することにしました。驚いたことに、弁論大会で優勝しました！その賞は？日本旅行でした！
Rather than simply go on vacation in Japan, I wanted to study Japanese, so I used the speech contest prize to go to Hokkaido, where I took a short two week course at a Japanese language school in Sapporo.
ただの旅行よりも、日本語を勉強したかったので、弁論大会の賞で北海道に行って、札幌の日本語学校で2週間の短期コースを受けました。
Coincidently, Back Number held a concert in Sapporo during the same two weeks I was there! I thought I would finally have a chance to see Back Number perform live, but the tickets were all sold out before I could purchase one.
偶然にも、 私が札幌にいた同じ2週間の間、バックナンバーは札幌でコンサートを行いました！ようやくバックナンバーのライブに行くチャンスが来たと思いましたが、私がチケットを買おうとしたら、売り切れになってしまいました。
A year after my trip to Hokkaido, I graduated from university. The result of all the job searching I had done before graduating was that I would work in Kagawa Prefecture. I moved to Kagawa a few months later, and in addition to doing important things like buying furniture for my apartment and getting used to my new workplace, I signed up for the Back Number fan club. For me, signing up for the fan club was one more important thing I had to do!
北海道の旅から1年後、大学を卒業しました。卒業する前に色々就職しましたが、その結果として香川県で働くことになりました。数か月後、香川県に引っ越して、アパートの家具を買ったり新しい職場に慣れたりするというような大事な用事を含めて、バックナンバーのファンクラブに登録しました。私にとっては、それも大事な用事の一つでした！

Right after I signed up for the fan club, I was able to see Back Number perform live in Ehime Prefecture!
ファンクラブに登録してからすぐに、愛媛県でバックナンバーのライブに行くことができました！
Of course, I brought Max to the concert with me!
もちろん、マックスもコンサートに連れて行きました！
I have also been able to participate in two fan club tours! I had to travel all the way to Ehime Prefecture for the first concert, but since the venues for the fan club tours were located in Takamatsu City, rather than take the train or the bus, I was able to ride my bike to both concerts!
2回のファンクラブツアーに参加することもできました！初めてのコンサートのために愛媛まで行く必要がありましたが、ファンクラブツアーの会場は香川県の高松市にあったので、電車やバスではなくて、自転車で行けました！
During concerts, the lead singer of Back Number often says that through his music he hopes to help people, even if only in a small way. If I ever had a chance to meet the members of Back Number, I know exactly what I would say. "Thank you for everything."
バックナンバーのボーカルがよく言うのは「音楽を通じて少しでも誰かの力になれたら」ということです。もしバックナンバーのメンバーに会うチャンスがあれば、伝いたいことはもう決まりました。「力になってくれて、ありがとう。」
