みなさん、こんにちは、今回は、【今、アメリカで起きている事】と題して、
当校のヘッドティーチャーである、ダロー先生が全米各地にいる友人たちにインタビューしたレポートをお送りします。
皆さん、ご存知のように現在アメリカでは、黒人男性が白人警察官によって、逮捕された際に、
膝で喉を締め付けられ、窒息して亡くなるという事件が起きました。

これが引き金となり、全米各地でデモが起こり、これに便乗して破壊や略奪が行われました。
現在は、殺された黒人男性の弟や他の平和的なデモ参加者によって、破壊や略奪行為は少なくなったと思いますが、
今回は、当時の現地の様子をお伝えします。
まずは、シカゴに住むダロー先生の友人からです。
“National guard was called in. It’s a war zone there. Things are funneling into the suburbs too. We have a 6pm curfew tonight.” (In Chicago May 31, 2020)
「国家警備隊が呼ばれた。まるで戦争地帯だ。 事態は人々の住む郊外にも流れ込んで来ている。 今夜、午後6時から外出禁止令が出された。」 （2020年5月31日、シカゴ）
“It’s just all so sad. I was in the city all day Friday and there were peaceful protests going on here and there.....until it wasn’t. A few bottles were thrown and then those that came for violence instead of protest, took over.” (Chicago)
「全ての事がとても悲しい。 僕は金曜日一日中街にいた。その時は、あちこちで平和的なデモが行われていた……それが終わるまで。そして、何本かボトルが投げこまれた、それらは、デモに代わって暴力に引き継がれて行った」 （シカゴ）
続いて、カリフォルニアに住む友人から
My friend in California says: "My feeling is this is a watershed moment in American History, much like the civil rights movement when we were little. The inequality and injustice is as bad as it has ever been and I feel like young people have had enough. Economic and political power is shifting - white establishment better get with it because I can't predict how it will change but change is coming."
「我々が小さい頃に起こった公民権運動のように、アメリカの歴史における分岐点の瞬間が訪れているように感じます。不平等と不公正はかつてないほど深刻で、若者がそれらに不満を持っていたように感じています。 経済的および政治的勢力は変化しています。それらに所属する白人層はそれがどのように変化するかを予測することはできませんが、変化がやってくることはわかっており、それに対処して行くことになるでしょう」
“Total anarchy in some of these places right now. The police have no control in Long Beach right now. The helicopters are showing total lawlessness right now and this is like the 3rd day in a row and there's not shit they can do about it.”
こちらも、カリフォルニアの友人から
「現在、いくつかの場所は、まるで総無政府状態にあります。 現在、警察はロングビーチを制圧できておらず。 3日連続で無法地帯をヘリコプターが写し、それについてなす術がない状態です」
最後に、現在の状況を考察した、ダロー先生の見解です。
my opinion: "I came to Japan in 1986. Already at that time people were getting frustrated with the system. Economic and racial inequality. White people making a killing on Wall Street, CEOs making millions, while ordinary people struggled just to pay the rent and put food on the table. Since then it's just gotten steadily worse and worse. I think ordinary people want someone like Bernie Sanders to come in and repair the system. They want justice, they want environmental protection, they want good education, they want racial equality, they want universal healthcare and reasonably priced medicine, they want to repair the crumbling infrastructure, they want housing for everyone, they want jobs with decent salaries for everyone, they want politicians who work for the common people. But none of that is happening. In fact it just keeps getting worse. The system is rigged against the common people and they know it and they have had enough. The police just seem to work for the rich people protecting their interests, and arresting poor people and minorities. Private prisons with millions of prisoners? It's madness. People have had enough."
「私は1986年に日本に来ました。そのときすでにアメリカの人々は経済のシステムに不満を抱いていました。経済と人種の不平等。白人はウォール街で私利私欲に走り時には人殺しだって厭わない、CEOは一人で数百億円を手に入れましたが、一般の人々は家賃を払うことや、食べ物を買うことに苦労しました。それ以来、状況はどんどん悪化しています。私が思うに、普通の人々は、バーニーサンダースのような人がやって来てシステムを修復することを望んでいると思います。正義を望み、環境保護を望み、教育を望み、人種平等を望み、彼らは普遍的なヘルスケアと手ごろな価格の医療を望み、崩壊しつつあるインフラの修復を望み、皆のための住宅を望み、誰にとってもまともな給与の仕事を望んでおり、一般市民のために働く政治家を望んでいます。しかし、それは届きませんでした。そして、実際には、悪化し続けているのです。これらの経済システムは一般の人々に対して平等ではないことは周知の事実であり、一般の人々もその事がわかっており、彼らはもう我慢ならなかったのはないでしょうか。警察は、一部の大金持ちの利益を尊重し、貧しい人々やマイノリティを逮捕しているようにも見えます。アメリカでは刑務所は、民営化されており、囚人一人に対して政府から補助が出ます。そんな利益を得るために、何百万人もの囚人がいる私立刑務所が存在するのです。それはまるで狂気です。人々はもう我慢の限界だと思います。それらの全てが重なって今回の暴動に発展しているのではないかと考えています」
だんだん平和的な様相を帯びてきたデモですが、今後、どうなっていくのでしょうか？
