There are many reasons why we exercise....Some are to do with our outward appearance of health and wellness, while others are more to do with benefits that are more internal, and not so obvious to the naked eye.
As many people find conceiving a child is more difficult than they initially thought, increasing numbers of females are coming to GofitZuu and GoWFit classes due to concerns about their fertility and questions about how exercise can positively affect this.
Exercise/yoga/massage etc are NOT magic fix-its that will automatically solve all your pregnancy complications,
However, regular exercise can help promote fertility by increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs and helping to maintain a healthy endocrine system (important for hormone balance). A healthy endocrine system can aid fertility (and also stress management!) due to the critical role it plays in hormone release.
So, while not being a 'magic bullet' that will assure you get pregnant, regular exercise can help....not to mention, the better shape you are in when you do fall pregnant, the easier it is to 'rebound' after giving birth!
For so long, we have been conditioned to believe that the most important indicator of success or failure of an exercise plan is the number that appears when we step on the scale. 'Weight loss' was the buzz word and all 'successful' exercise programs were designed with this in mind.
Recently we have come to look at 'fat loss' and 'body compositon' as more accurate and realistic means of measuring success. While these terms may seem confusing to many, they are actually relatively straightforward.
'Fat loss' focuses on the amount of fat we lose specifically, rather than just general 'weight loss'. If we lose muscle and replace it with fat, the number on the scale may drop significantly....we have lost 'weight'. But is this a good indication of a successful training program? Often we may find that this type of program may lead to significant weight loss in the short term, but as it is often unable to be maintained in the long term, the weight soon returns...plus a little extra!
Alternatively, when we focus on losing fat, we may find that although we look and feel much healthier, and we are able to fit into smaller clothes more easily, the number on the scales has not dropped as much as we wanted it to....Does this mean our exercise program has failed??.......The reason our weight may not have dropped as drastically as our size is often because at the same time as losing fat, we have gained a little lean muscle. Lean muscle does not necessarily add bulk, but helps our metabolism to speed up - and encourages our body to convert fat supplies to energy that can be used to fuel this. The fat lost is less likely to return as the metabolism continues to be boosted - so keep exercising!
