俺は谷の街で育った。この街の若者は父親の跡を継ぐように育てられる。
俺とメアリーはハイスクールで出会い、彼女はまだ１７才だった。
二人で谷を抜け出しドライブに出かけた
二人で川に行った。
川へ行って遊んだ。
子どもが出来たと、彼女の手紙はそれだけ書いていた。
俺の１９歳の誕生日、労組の組合証と結婚式に着る上着を手に入れ二人だけで役所に届けた。
結婚式の笑いも教会での式もなく祝福の花もウェイディングドレスもなかった。
その夜、二人で川へ行った
川へ飛び込んで泳いだ
川へ行ったんだ、、、。
ジョンズタウン建設会社に就職したけど不況であまり仕事がない。
大切だと思ってた全てのものがみんな空しく消えてしまったようだ。
俺は何も覚えていないふりをして、メアリーはちっとも気にしていないというふりをしている。
でも兄貴の車でドライブした時のことは覚えている。
貯水池でのメアリーの日焼けして濡れた身体は素敵だった。
夜に堤防で俺は目を覚まして横になっていた。彼女の息を感じるために近くに抱きよせたんだ。
今、こんな思い出がよみがえって俺を苦しめる。呪いのように。
叶わなかった夢は偽りなのか。それとももっと悪いものなのか。
俺が川に行って、川は干上がっていると知っているけど
俺は川へ行く。
