雨期は少し野菜の質が落ちています。同じ値段でも、キャベツやニンジンは小ぶりに、食用バナナのプランテーンもあまり姿を見かけません。1年前は旬の野菜も分からなかったけれど、今はちょっと傾向をつかめるようになりました。

The quality of vegetables became worse in rain season. The size of cabbages and carrots are small, I don’t see planteen. 1 year ago, I didn’t know about vegetables in season，but now I can determinate that.

ガーナで突然のキャンセルは当たり前。1年過ごしてガーナ文化にもだいぶ慣れましたが、事前連絡は欲しいです。

It takes granted that they suddenly cancel an appointment in Ghana. I became familiar with Ghanaian culture after staying for 1 year, but I want information in advance.
362日目、4言語が飛び交う診察室
交通事故による脊損の患者さんがやって来ました。彼はフランス語しか話せず、医師からの病状説明を受けていないとのことでした。理学療法士が現地語と英語で説明、フランス語を話せる他の職員が患者さんに通訳、付き添い同士はおそらくハウザ語で会話。彼は半年経ってやっと自分の症状について理解できたのでした。
30th June (362 days) consultation room where 4 languages are exchanged
One paraplegia patient who was injured by traffic accident came for consultation. He haven't given any explanations of his condition from medical doctor, because he can't speak English. Physical therapist told to another worker who can speak English and French in English, then he translate what she said into French. Attendants talk each other in Hausa. Finally, he understands own condition after half a year.

私の住む町からバスで約1時間の所にあるマンポンという町に、初めてガーナに植えられたカカオの木があります。今から135年前の1879年に赤道ギニアから持ち込まれたカカオの種から、ガーナ全土に広まりました。ガーナの子たちがチョコレートを食べている姿はあまり見られません。カカオからチョコレートへの加工に手間がかかりコストが高いため地元の人はあまり食べられていないようです。ココア飲料用の粉末は低コストのため広く普及しているようです。
1st July (363 days) the first cocoa farm in Ghana
There is the oldest tree that was planted in Ghana at Manpon town where about one hour
No children those who eat chocolate were seen in Ghana. It wasn't taken much by local people. Since it cost high and take a lot of time to process. However, powder for drinking is spread since it cost low.

今は雨期、10時頃から大雨が降りだしました。建物の中でひたすら雨が止むのを待っていました。2時半ごろまで降り続いたため今日はお昼ご飯なし。この時期は傘常備です。
2nd July (364 days) without eating lunch
Now is rainy season. It started heavy raining from 10 a.m. didn't have an umbrella, so I had been waiting until the rain had stopped in the architecture. I stayed without lunch, because it kept raining till two thirty. An umbrella always has been ready in this season.

少し湿気のある空気、肌の色の違うアフリカの人たち、これから2年間ここで暮らすんだと覚悟を決めた日でした。アフリカの人から見た日本人がどのように思われているのか、そしてガーナの人たちがどのような環境で生活しているのか、身を持って体験した1年間。2年後にはお互いがどのように見えているでしょうか？
3rd July (365 days) one year from arrival to Ghana
Having felt the humid air, African people whose skin color is dark, a year ago today was the day that I had resigned myself to stay here for two years. I learned a lot how African people think about Japanese by my own experiences and know what kind of environment where they live in. There are many walls before me, I expect to let them know what Japanese have a respect for in some small way. How will we be able to see each other after 1 year?

理学療法室の棚には古い装具が山のように押し込められています。今日は3分の1を整理整頓。物を把握できたら伝ってもらうとしよう。
4th July (367 days) keeping things tidy and in order
Old orthoses are packed into a shelf in a physical therapy room. I put one third of them in order. After I realized what those items are, let my colleagues help.

また新しいボランティアが14人やって来ました。ガーナ生活、初めは大変だけど頑張ってね。

14 volunteers have come to Ghana. At first, life in Ghana will be hard for them. Good luck.

日本のJICA 事務所と総会のプログラムについて会議をしました。今回は日本とガーナで国を越えてのワークショップを計画中です。

We had a meeting about one of the program of general assembly for volunteers with JICA office staffs in JAPAN. We are planning to do workshop which is not limited to the countries.

景色のきれいな隣町の丘にウォーキング。隣町でも例によって子どもたちは「オブロニ、オブロニ！チャイナ」と私を呼びます。いつも通り「私の名前はオブロニじゃない、私の名前はヤー。チャイナではなくてジャパニーズだ」と訂正。このセリフ何度言っただろう・・
7th July (370 days) my name is Yaa
I went walking to Highland in next town. Children call me "Obroni, China!" in that town. I always corrected "My name is not Oburoni. My name is Yaa. I'm Japanese, not Chinese." I might told them a hundred times..

近所に住む脳性麻痺の親子のための月一回の集団理学療法を提案してみました。これを機会にお母さん同士のネットワークができたらなと思います。現地の保健師さんも組み入れて、将来は地域の活動として継続されていくというのが私の野望。
8th July (371 days) new project
I proposed monthly group exercise for parent and child. those who had cerebral palsy live around my workplace. I expect mothers will take the opportunity to build network of mothers. My ambitious is it.
372日目、腕神経叢麻痺
松葉杖を新しい物に変えた後、左手の筋力が落ちてしまった患者さんがいます。腋窩に体重をかけすぎる人やはりいるようです。
9th July (372 days) paralysis of brachial plexus
One patients' muscle power has been weak after change his crutches to new one. I realized that case who put their shoulder weight on the crutch too much as expected.

左手足の先がしびれていると訴える患者さんがいました。日本語でも説明が難しい痺れの説明、この機会に英語ではなんと説明したらいいか調べてみよう。
10th July (373 days) numbness
One patient complained numbness of end of left hand and toes. It's difficult
to explain numbness in Japanese. I look up how I explain it in English.
374日目、ガーナでJOBA
大きなコンテナを載せたトラックがやって来ました。海外からの寄付された品々のようです。その中に日本製品の乗馬マシンがありました。自主トレの時間稼ぎにはなるけれど、患者さんが放置されないといいな。
11th July (374 days) JOBA in Ghana
A track with big container came to my place. Those items are donated from abroad. We got a hose riding machine that was made in Japan. It may gain time for self exercises. I hope patients will not be left alone.
375日目、婚約セレモニー
同僚の息子さんの結納に招待されました。結納の品は、まず聖書、指輪、何かがたくさん入ったスーツケース、封筒に入ったお金。面白いのは、司会者のセリフ。贈り物が足りないから、これでは嫁に行かせられないよ、と。まるで漫才みたいで笑えました。

I was invited to engagement ceremony of my colleague's son. Betrothal presents are bible, engage ring, suitcase many things in it, moneys in envelope. The phrase of a master of the ceremonies was funny. “These gifts are not enough, so they can’t give their daughter in marriage”. It looks like a comic stage and, it was laughable.
376日目、障害を持った人にインタビュー
今日は障害当事者のミーティングの日。膝が伸びず、手と膝で歩く青年にちょっとしたインタビューを試みました。身の回りのことは自分でできている。以前は家に閉じこもっていて誰も近づいてくれなかったけれど、ここに来るとみんなが受け入れてくれるのがうれしいと。お金が無くて病院に行けなったという話もありました。また次回誰かとお話しできるといいな。
13th July (376 days) interview to people with disabilities
Today is a meeting day of people with disabilities (PWDs). I tried interview to a young man whose knee cannot be straight, so that he walks with hands and knees He said that he can look after himself. In old time, he was locked himself in his house, no one came closer to him. But now, he is happy because all members here accept him. He also said other episode. His father had no money, so that he couldn't go to hospital. Next time I wish I'll talk with someone.

同僚が健康保険について話していました。公立病院は保険でカバーされますが、カトリック系の病院では保険がきかなくなったとのこと。政府にお金が無くなったと言っていました。驚きです。
14th July (377 days) stopped health insurance
In these days, medical fee can't covered by health insurance in hospitals managed by catholic group. They said that it happened because government doesn't have money. I was surprise to hear that.
375日目、草むしり
家の前の庭が雑草だらけになってきました。現地の人はカトラスという大きなナイフのようなもので刈りますが、私は地道に手作業で。残りの根が深くはっている草はまた今度雨の後にトライです。
15th July (378 days) weeding
Many grasses had grown up in the yard in front of my home. Local people weed with “catras” that looks like a big knife. I weeded by my hand. Remains those which root deeply, I'll try after rain.
376日目、雨が降ったらお休み
今日は朝から土砂降りの雨。居住棟と歩行練習エリアには屋根がないので、滑ると危険なので患者さんはやって来ません。というわけで、部屋まで行ってベッドサイド理学療法。
16th July (379 days) no training if it rain
It was heavy rain from morning. There is no roof between accommodation and walking place. If they slip it's dangerous for them. So that patients don't come for training. I go to do therapy at their bedsides.
377日目、子どものリアクション
雨のため、室内で体操です。輪になって歌を歌いながらおもちゃを隣の人に回していくゲームをすると、みんなおもちゃの取り合いのようになり大興奮。日本だったらもうちょっとおとなしいような。ガーナの子たち元気だなぁ！
17th July (380 days) reaction of children
We exercised inside due to rain. I organized a game that they make a circle and pass some toys to next person with a song. How lively they were!

日本からのゲストに協力隊の活動についてお話するために、他2人の隊員と共に昼食会に招かれました。首都の5つ星ホテルでのランチビュッフェ、1週間分栄養補給！
18th July (381 days) lunch at five-star hotel
I was invited lunch meeting with other two volunteers to talk about activities for guest from Japan. It was a buffet lunch at five-star hotel in capital, so we could get good nutrition for one week.
