Patrick and his promotion
パトリックと昇進
Patrick has been telling Jim about what he is going to do
once he gets promoted to the manager of the office.
(パトリックはジムにオフィスマネージャになったらどうするかを語っていた)

Here comes Mr. Foreman.
スピーチはとっといたほうがいいぞ。
フォアマンさんが来た。
Towards me? Jim, what would I say?
こっちに向かって？ジム、オレなんて言おう？
Just pretend to be surprised well.
ただ驚いたフリをしてりゃいいさ。
Hello, Patrick, how are you today?
やあパトリック。調子はどうだい？
Oh Mr. Foreman, never been good, thank you.
ああフォアマンさん、これ以上ないくらい上々です。
Good. You heard the news yet?
そいつはいい。ニュースはもう聞いたかね？
News? No, not that I can think of...?
ニュース？いえ、何も思い浮かびませんが。
No wonder about that.
You see, Henry has resigned as of today.
まあそれも不思議はない。
いやね、ヘンリーが今日付けで辞めることになったんだ。
No! Really? What happened to him?
まさか、ほんとですか？どうしたって言うんです？

I just came to let you know something,
because you might need some time to prepare for this.
うんそれに関しては後で話そう。
それよりキミに知らせに来たんだ。
きっと準備するのに少し時間がいると思ってね。

準備って何のですか、フォアマンさん。

新しい上司さ、ヘンリーの後の。
Yes, oh, I don't know what to say...
はい、あ、何て言ったらいいか…
That's understandable indeed.
I know it was quite a surprise to you.
それはよくわかってる。
キミにはかなりの驚きだったろう。

so I think I'm ready for this.

誰が何しに来るんですか？

Oh, you don't know him probably.
He's been in charge of the office in London.
たぶんキミは知らんかもしれん。
彼は今までロンドンのオフィスを仕切ってたから。
Oh, is he...? So he is coming from London?
へ～そうですか。じゃあ彼はロンドンからくるんですね。
Yes, he should be here in any minute.
I hope you show him around well, okay?
そうだ、もう何分もせず着くだろう。
キミにはいろいろ案内してくれるよう頼んだよ、いいね？
Yes... I think I can manage...
はい、なんとかできると思います。
Good, I knew I could count on you.
よかった。君に任せればいいとわかってたよ。
.....Oh, Jim there you were!

ああ、ジムそこにいたのか。彼を手伝ってやってくれな。
Yes sir, I will, and ...comfort him, too...

The Milkmaid and Her Pail
乳しぼりの娘
Patty the Milkmaid was going to market
carrying her milk in a Pail on her head.
As she went along she began calculating what she would do
with the money she would get for the milk.
"I'll buy some fowls from Farmer Brown," said she,
"and they will lay eggs each morning,
which I will sell to the Parson's wife.
With the money that I get from the sale of these eggs
I'll buy myself a new dimity frock and a chip hat;
and when I go to market,
won't all the young men come up and speak to me!
Polly Shaw will be that jealous; but I don't care.
I shall just look at her and toss my head like this."
As she spoke she tossed her head back,
the Pail fell off it, and all the milk was spilt.
So she had to go home and tell her mother what had occurred.
"Ah, my child," said the mother,
"Do not count your chickens before they are hatched."
乳しぼりのパティは市場へ出かけるところだった。
桶を頭に乗せてミルクを運ぶ途中だ。
歩きながら彼女はミルクで得たお金の使い道を考え始めた。
｢ブラウンさんから何羽かニワトリを買うわ、
そして毎朝卵を産むでしょう。
それをパーソンの奥さんに売るの。
そうして卵を売ったお金で
チェックの上着とチップハットを買うの。
それで市場へ行ったなら
男の子達はみんな私の側に来て話しかけるんじゃないかしら。
ポリー・ショウはきっとやきもちを焼くわ、でも気にしない。
彼女を見るだけで、頭をこんな風に振ってみるの。」
彼女はそうしゃべりながら頭をうしろに振ってみた。
すると桶は落ちてミルクはこぼれてしまった。
彼女は仕方なく家に帰り、何が起きたかお母さんに話した。
｢ああムスメや、孵る前からヒナの勘定をしちゃダメだよ」
