"one for the road" は
「(飲み屋を出て帰路につく前に飲む) 最後の一杯」
「お別れのための一杯・一献」
という意味です。
"one" は 「一杯のお酒」、 "road" は 「帰路」。
ヒッチコック劇場に "One for the Road" という
ドンピシャのタイトルの作品があります。
この作品では コーヒーが 死の旅へのお別れの
一杯、になりますが..............
ちょっと 覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Charles Hendricks は 幸せをかみしめている。
家には溺愛する妻がいる。
商用に出かければ 外には 溺愛する愛人もいる。
ところが、妻が 愛人のライターを見つけてから
事態は一変した。
妻 Marcia は 元看護士である。
彼女は 夫が商用で旅に出かけると 外で 女と会って
いることを 知ったのだ。
浮気相手は Beryl Abbott という名の女であることが
分かった。」
(Charles Hendricks is happy.
At home, he has a doting wife.
And on business trips, he has a doting mistress.
Things only become difficult for him when his wife finds his
mistress's cigarette lighter.
His wife Marcia, a former nursea, learns that when her husband
is away on business trips, he's seeing another woman, cheating
on her with a woman named Beryl Abbott. )
「Marcia は 嫉妬深い女性ではなく 初めは さほど
気には留めていなかった。
が、Marcia は 夫には内緒で その愛人に会うため
出掛けた。そして、愛人の家を突き止めた。
古着を収集している風な振りをしてその家を窺って
いた。
実は、彼女は 本当に とても陰険なことを考えて
いたのだ。」
(She's not a jealous woman and makes little of it at first.
Unknown to him, his wife takes a trip to meet the other woman,
tracking down her home. She pretends to be collecting old clothes.
But her real goal is far more sinister. )
「(Beryl の家に入った Marcia は) Beryl を殺すために
台所の砂糖入れに そっと 毒を混ぜ入れた。
帰宅した Marcia は 夫が Beryl の家に行ったことを
知った。
夫を殺す積りのない Marcia は Beryl の家へと急ぎ、
砂糖入れに 毒を混ぜ入れたことを話した。
Beryl は Marcia の夫が 既に 毒入り砂糖を摂ったと
Marcia に嘘をついた。
これは大変、と Marcia は Beryl の家を飛び出して
医者を迎えに走った。
Beryl の家の別の間に こっそりと隠れていた Charles
が ノコノコと出てきた。
毒のことなど 毛頭知らない Charles は 妻が Beryl の
ことに気付いてしまったことの方を気にし出した。
で、関係はこれっ切りで終わりにしようと決め Beryl に
そう話した。
家に帰ろうとしている Charles に Beryl は お帰りの前に
コーヒーでも一杯いかが、と言って すすめた。
そうしよう、と言って Charles は 砂糖入れの砂糖に 手を
伸ばした................」
(She tries to poison Beryl by putting poison in her sugar bowl.
When she goes home she discovers that that her husband has
gone to Beryl.
Not wanting to kill him, she goes to Beryl and tells her of the
poison.
Beryl lies that Charles has already taken the poison.
Marcia leaves Beryl's house to find a doctor.
Charles, who was hiding himself in another room, comes in.
Not knowing the muder plot but knowing that his wife knows
about Beryl, Charles decides to end the affair, which he told to
Beryl .
Before leaving, Beryl asks him to have some coffee for the road.
He do so and helps himself to some sugar...................)
