(O. Henry, pseudonym ofWilliam Sydney Porter (born September11, 1862,Greensboro,North Carolina, U.S.—died June 5, 1910,New York, New York),Americanshort-story writer whose talesromanticized thecommonplace—in particular the life of ordinarypeople inNewYork City. His stories expressed the effect of coincidence oncharacterthrough humour, grim orironic, and often had surprise endings, adevice that became identified with his nameand cost him criticalfavour when its vogue had passed.Porter attended a school taught by his aunt, then clerked inhis uncle’s drugstore. In 1882 he went toTexas, where heworked on a ranch, in ageneral land office, and later as tellerin the First National Bank inAustin. He began writing sketchesat about the time of his marriage to Athol Estes in 1887, andin 1894 he started a humorous weekly,The Rolling Stone. When that venture failed, Porter joined theHouston Postasreporter, columnist, and occasional cartoonist. (In February 1896 he was indicted forembezzlement of bank funds.Friends aided his flight toHonduras. News of his wife’s fatal ill-ness, however, took him back to Austin, andlenient authorities didnot press his case until after her death. When convicted, Porterreceived the lightest sentence possible, and in 1898 he enteredthe penitentiary atColumbus, Ohio; his sentence of five years wasshortened to three years and three months for good behaviour. As night druggist in the prison hospital, he could write to earnmoney for support of his daughter Margaret. His stories of adventurein thesouthwest U.S. andCentral America were immediatelypopular with magazine readers, and when he emerged from prisonW.S. Porter had become O. Henry. In 1902 O. Henry arrived in NewYork—his “Bagdad on the Subway.” From December 1903 to January1906 he produced a story a week for theNew York Sunday Worldmagazine and also wrote for other magazines. (Despite his popularity, O.
