"smitten" は "smite"(欲望・恐怖・病気などが
襲う) の過去分詞形で 「殴られた、苦しんでいる」
という意味ですが、口語で、
「すっかり惚れ込んだ、ノボせ上がった」
という意味で使われます。
自動車整備士の若者が 高級自動車の修理のため
に やって来た 見目麗しい女性に ひと目で すっかり
惚れ込んでしまった。
が、それが 命取りになるとは ................
ﾋｯﾁｺｯｸ劇場の "Death Scene"(死のシーン) という
タイトルの作品です。
女性の父親と称する男が 元映画監督 であることから
このような タイトルが つけられたのでしょう。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Monica Revere という女性が 父親が所有している
名車 Duesenberg を 修理 の ために もってきた時、
整備士の Leo Manfred は 彼女を ひと目 見て 惚れ
込んでしまった。
で、女に ちやほやとする Leo は 彼女の父親で 映画
監督をしていた Gavin Revere 氏 が 妻の Monica
Parrish のために 建てた という ﾊﾘｳｯﾄﾞのﾓﾝﾍﾞｰﾙ に
ある 今は 色褪せてしまった邸宅へ 彼女を送り届けた。
Loe は 30歳なのだが、11歳か12歳の時 よく Monica
Parrish の映画を 見に行ったものだ。
Revere 氏は ポロの試合中に怪我をして ずっと車イス
の生活を続けており、妻の Monica Parrish は 離婚
して行方知れずになっている、という。」
(Auto mechanic Leo Manfred is smitten when Monica Revere
brings her father's Duesenberg in for repair. A ladies' man,
he drives her home to Mon-Vere, the fading Hollywood estate
built by her father, film director Gavin Revere, for his bride,
Monica Parrish. Leo is 30 years old and went to see Monica's
movies when he was 11 or 12. Revere was injured while play-
ing polo and ended up in a wheelchair; his wife divorced him
and disappeared.)

目を付けた Leo は 元映画監督 の この綺麗な娘を
誘惑しようと決めた。
高級カーの話などをして 老監督と関係を深め、彼の
娘の Monica に 急速にアプローチした。
こうして、時待たずして Leo の Monica への求愛が
うまく運んだ。
ところが、Monica は "客の多いクラブや明るい場所"
を 極度に嫌がった。
Leo は やがて モンベーレの邸宅に 入り浸るように
なった。
邸宅の裏は 敷地が荒れ放題で、切り立った 少なくとも
200ﾌｨｰﾄ ほど は ある 深い渓谷に落ち込むような
断崖絶壁になっているのを Leo は 目にした。」
(Leo sets his sights on the valuable property and resolves to
seduce the film director's lovely daughter. Bonding with the
older man over talk of the expensive car, Leo quickly appeals
to his daughter, Monica, and the courtship is rapid and success-
ful, though Monica shuns "popular clubs and bright lights." Leo
soon becomes "firmly entrenched at Mon-Vere" and observes
that the rear of the property is in disrepair and overlooks "a
sheer drop of at least two hundred feet." )
「Leo は Monica に結婚を申し込み、父親の Revere
が ふたりの結婚を許した。
が、Leo に 死亡時５万ドルの生命保険を掛け、受取人
を Monica とする、というのが 結婚の条件だった。
保険契約を締結し、Leo, Monica それに 元映画監督の
父親 Gavin の３人が 邸宅の裏にあるテラスに集まり、
新婚旅行について話し合った。
そこは 断崖絶壁の上にあり、いまにも崩れ落ちそうな
場所であった。
Monica が テラスの塀の上に座った。
Leo は Monica が 塀の向こうの渓谷に落ちぬようにと
手を差しのべようとした。
と、その時、Gavin が Leo を 押し、塀の縁から渓谷へ
突き落とした。こうして Leo は 墜死した。
落ちて行く Leo の目に Monica の顔が ハッキリ と
見えたのだ。その顔は Revere の妻 Monica Parrish
の顔であり、娘の顔ではなかった。

そして、 Revere 夫婦は Gavin が 映画監督として
再起するために このお金を使おうと話し合った。」
(Leo proposes marriage and Revere agrees, with the condition
that Leo purchase a $50,000 insurance policy naming Monica
as beneficiary. After the arrangements have been made, Leo,
Monica, and Gavin discuss honeymoons on the rear patio, near
the crumbling wall that overlooks the precipice. Monica sits
on the wall and Leo moves to keep her from falling, but as
he does so Gavin pushes him over the edge and he falls to
his death. As he falls, he sees Monica's face clearly and
realizes she is Revere's wife, not his daughter.
The life insurance check is delivered and the Reveres agree
that the money will come in handy for Gavin's comeback as
a director.)
