偉人フランシス・ベーコンの呆気ない最期

英国の貴族であり、法学者、政治家、それに

哲学者として幅広く活躍した F. ベーコン、その

最期は まことに 呆気ないものだったようです。

「1626年3月下旬、散歩で外出中、英国の哲学者で

文学者のベーコンは ロンドン市街に高く降り積もって

いる雪を 塩の代用として 生肉保存のために使えない

か ｳｲｻﾞｰﾎﾞｰﾝ博士と話し合っていた。

ﾊｲｹﾞｰﾄ･ﾋﾙの空いた場所に停めた馬車の灯を明々と

点けて、買ってきた鶏を捌いて その中に雪を詰め込んだ。

既に体が冷え切っていたベーコンは 雪を使って実験した

ものだから 寒気を催し 気分が悪くなり、ﾊｲｹﾞｰﾄにあった

ｱﾙﾝﾃﾞﾙ伯爵の館で寝込んでしまった。

おそらく 気管支炎に罹ってしまい、それから肺炎を発症

するに至ったのだ。

症状は 確実に悪化してゆき、1626年4月9日イースター

サンデーの日に 風変わりな名前の親戚の男 ｻｰ･ｼﾞｭﾘｱｽ・

ｼｰｻﾞｰ の腕に抱かれて 息を引き取った。」

(During an outing late in March 1626, the English philosopher

and man of letters discussed with Dr. Witherborne the possibility

of using snow, which was lying thick in the London streets, instead

of salt to preserve meat. Alighting from their coach at the floor

of Highgate Hill, they purchased a fowl and processed to stuff it

with snow. Bacon, already cold, became so chilled by the ex-

periment that he took ill and was put to bed at the Earl of

Arundel's house at Highgate.  Suffering probably from bronchitis

and then pneumonia, he steadily declined and died on Easter

Sunday, 9 April 1626, in the arms of his oddly named kinsman,

Sir Juius Caesar. )
