"a piece of the action" は、
「分け前にあずかること、儲け話にひと口乗ること」
という意味で使われます。
この中の "action" は 俗語で 「分け前、儲け口」 と
いう意味です。不正行為に関わる利益の分け前や
儲け口というニュアンスがあるようです。
・ I want a piece of the action.
（オレも その儲け話に 一枚加わりたい。）
実在のギャンブラー Arnold Rothstein (1882-1928)
をモデルにした小説を ヒッチコック劇場でドラマ化して
います。
タイトルは "A Piece of the Action" です。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「プロのギャンブラー Duke Marsden は 強迫感に襲わ
れていて 首まで ドップリと ギャンブルに浸かっている
ような状態であり、妻に逃げられそうになっている。
沈着冷静で誇り高い彼の妻は そのような彼にうんざり
しており、遂に ポーカーを捨てるか 妻を捨てるか の
何れかを選びなさい、と 最後通牒を 彼に突き付けた。
親譲りの道を苦しみながらも歩んできた彼ではあったが、
妻の最後通牒に応え ポーカーをやめることに決めた。
或る日の事、Duke の弟 Chuck が、法科学生なのだが、
これまたギャンブル熱に浮かされていて、高い賭けのﾎﾟｰｶｰ
をしたくて やって来た。
Chuck は 昔からのﾎﾟｰｶｰ友達に Chuck の相手をして貰う
よう手筈を整えた。
友達は 新米から金を巻き上げる機会ができたことを喜んだ。」
(Professional gambler Duke Marsden is about to lose his wife because
of his compulsivity. She, a cold and aristocratic wife, fed up with
his habits, gives him an ultimatum: either give up poker or lose her.
Though bitterly treading in his father's footsteps, he decides to give up
poker. One day Duke's younger brother Chuck, a law student, catches
the fever too and arrives looking for a high-stakes game of poker.
Duke arranges to have his brother play a couple of his old poker buddies,
who would love to fleece a newcomer. )
「ところが、Duke の思い通りにはならなかった。
なんと、弟の Chuck が 破竹の勢いで勝ち始めたのだ。
負けた友人達が 文句を言いに Duke の処にやって来た
ので、この場を なんとかせねば、と Duke は考えた。
Duke は ゲームに参加し、印 を 付けたトランプ を 使った
イカサマ で Chuck を コテンパンに やっつけた。
Chuck は 辛そうに意気消沈して 帰って行った。
負けた金を取り返したので、その金を戻してやろうと友人達
に申し出た後にも拘わらず、友人達は Duke を 疑いの目で
見ていた。
先ほど 自分の弟に イカサマを 仕掛けた Duke という男は
ずっと これまで オレ達にも 同じようなイカサマをやっていたに違いない、と Chuck の 昔からの友人達は 考えた。
その夜、Duke は 瀕死の傷を負って 家に帰って来た。
彼は 妻に詫びた。
そして 妻の腕の中に抱かれ 息を引き取った。」
(The plan goes awry, however, when Chuck starts to clean house.
After the losers call Duke to complain, he realizes that he must deal
with the situation. He goes to the game and uses a marked deck to clean
out Chuck. Chuck leaves, bitter and broke.
Duke's old gambling buddies, however, eye him suspiciously even after
he offers them their lost money. They believe that Duke, who just cheated
his own brother, probably did the same to them in the past.
That night Duke arrives home mortally wounded.
He apologizes to his wife and dies in her arms.)
