"crack of doom" は 通常 定冠詞 "the" が付いて、
「最後の審判日 (の雷鳴) [= The Day of Judgement] 」
「この世の終わり」
という意味で使われます。
"crack" は 「鋭く鳴る音」、"doom" は 「最後の審判」
という意味で、黙示録８章にある "最後の審判に日の
雷の音 又は 大天使が吹くラッパの音" のことを指します。
ヒッチコック劇場の作品に こんな大仰なタイトルをつけた
ものがあります。
タイトルは そっくりそのまま "Crack of Doom" です。
そんな大袈裟な内容なのでしょうか。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「ﾆｭｰﾖｰｸ・ｼｶｺﾞ間を走る特急列車のラウンジで Mason Bridges が 少額賭け金のポーカーを 隣の客車でやらないか、と友人に誘われた。が、絶対にやらないと言って 断った。
絶対やらないなんて言わないで 付き合えよ、と友人のひとりがMason をせっついた。
そこで Mason は 自分でも分からない内に 泥棒のような大勝ちをした勝負の経験談を 彼に語り始めた。」
(In the club car of a New York-Chicago streamliner, Mason Bridges, adamantly
refuses his friends' request to join
him in the next car for a game of penny-ante.
One of the friends presses him about this refusal, and Mason tells
him a story of the time he had unwittingly become a thief. )
「何年か前のこと、 Mason は その頃 或る不動産会社に
勤めて 部長をしていた。
どうにも気の合わない Sam Klinker という社長がいたのだが、彼は Mason に １万ドルを渡し 会社の金庫に入れておけ、と言い、賭け金上限制限のないポーカーをやろうと誘った。
会社のこの社長は 金持ちで、手元にある金品は勿論のこと、
会社の金品まで なんでもかんでも 全て 一発勝負に賭ける
男であった。
この男の鼻を いつか 明かしてやろうと 思っていた Mason は(場慣れするために) それまでポーカーといえば 高い賭け金のゲームばかり選んでやっていた。

An unpleasant business associate named Sam Klinker gives him $10,000
to put in the company safe--and then invites him to a no-limit game
of poker.
The company's wealthy associate gambles everything he has and
everything his company owns on one single game.
Mason keeps returning to a high-stakes poker game because he
is determined to beat Sam Klinker.)
「或る日、Mason は 妻が 家の貯金を全部無くしてしまったことを知り、あとで返せばよかろう思い、会社の金庫から 社長の金の一部を盗み出してその金で ポーカーを やり続けた。
さて、Klinker との勝負だが、重大局面を迎えた時、Mason はクイーン４枚が転がり込むだろうと考え、Klinker が ビックリ仰天するような 積極的な手を打って出た。
ところが、局面は好転せず Mason は 破滅寸前にまで追い詰められてしまった。
土壇場で Mason は カードの読みを 間違えたことに気付き 万事休すの状態になった。
ところが、なんと Klinker が カードを伏せてゲームを投げ出してしまい ゲームを降りてしまったのだ。
こうして Mason は 大きな賭け金を手にした。
たった一枚のカードが 状況をひっくり返すことがあるのだ........」
(When Mason discovers that his wife has lost all their savings, he
steals a portion of Klinker's money from the safe to keep playing,
intending to return it later.
Playing with Klinker, during a crucial hand, Mason thinks he has
four queens and bets aggressively, to Klinker's surprise.
But circumstances conspire to bring Mason Bridges to the brink
of ruin.
At the last moment Mason realizes that he had read his cards
wrong, but Klinker folds and Mason wins the pot.
A single card makes all the difference................)
ポーカーはじめ 賭け事は 一切無縁で よく分かりませんが、
一瞬の差で 女神に微笑んで貰ったり 逆に 地獄を見る、ということが あるようですね。
大抵の人は この世の終わり (crack of doom) を 見ることになるのでしょうけれど...........
