"wasted" は 「役に立たなかった、無駄な」、「心身
ともに疲れ切った」 という意味ですが、 俗語で、
「ヘベレケに酔っ払った・前後不覚に泥酔した」
という意味でも使われます。
・ He's got wasted.
[あいつ、ヘベレケになっちゃった。]
自分が 一体 何を しでかしたのか、まったく記憶に
ない、という 酔い方で、知らないうちに 取返しの
きかない事をしてしまった、という恐ろしいことも
あり得ます............
そんな怖いお話が ヒッチコック劇場の作品の中に
あります。
タイトルは "Never Again"(取返しのきかない出来事)
です。
ちょっと 覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Karen Stewart は アル中治療の最中で、 酒を
飲むと とても 酒癖が悪い。
そんな彼女に 恋人の Jeff が 外せない大切な
カクテルパーテｲーがあるので 一緒に行かないか
と せかしてきた。気が進まなかったが 彼女は
一緒に行くことにした。
パーティーで Karen は したたか飲んだ。
Jeff が 少々困惑したことに、Karen が 別の男を
拾って バーへ しけ込んだ。
彼女の友人 Renee が Jeff に チョッカイをかけて
いるという噂を耳にしたからだ。
(Karen Stewart, a recovering alcoholic, has a serious drinking
problem.
One day, her boyfriend Jeff urges her to come to an important
cocktail party and she reluctantly agrees.
At the party Karen drinks heavily and, to Jeff's embarrassment,
she goes to a bar with another man because she was told that
her friend Renee was trying to seduce Jeff.)
「Karen の後を Jeff は追った。
Jeff は こっちに来いよ、と Karen に しきりと
言ったのだが、Karen は 振り切って、そのまま
すぐに 気を失ってしまった。
次の朝、Karen は 寝た覚えもない 刑務所のベッ
ドで目を覚ました。
今までにない ひどい 二日酔いで、前の晩の
ことなど全然 覚えていなかった。
また 酔っ払って 恋人 Jeff との 約束を破って
しまったことは 分かっていた。」
(Jeff tracks her down and urges her to come with him. She
waves him aside and promptly passes out.
The next morning she wakes up in an unfamiliar bed in jail,
hungover that's even worse than usual and with no memory
of the night before.
She knows that by getting drunk again she has once more
broken her promise to her boyfriend Jeff. )
「Karen は 手に包帯が巻かれていて ひどい怪我
を負っていることに気付いた。
前の晩、何があったのだろう、と懸命に思い出そう
とした。
バラバラになってしまった前の晩の出来事の片鱗を
寄せ集めようとしてみた。
でも、思い出すのは 怒って飲んだくれたことだけ
だった。
記憶にある最後の出来事は グラスを手の中で
割ってしまったKaren を Jeff が 介抱している
場面であった。
Karen は 割れたグラスを手にした男性を殺した
罪で 逮捕されたのであった。
どうやら Karen は ヘベレケに酔いつぶれて意識
昏迷状態の中で 割れたグラスで Jeff の喉元を
深く切ってしまったようである...............」
(Then she realizes that her hand is bandaged and badly injured,
and she struggles to remember what happened the night before.
She tries to piece together the rest of the night, but all she can
remember is being angry and drunk.
Her last memory is of breaking a glass in her hand, and Jeff trying
to help her.
She is under arrest for the murder of a man with a broken glass.
Apparently, she slashed her lover Jeff's throat in a drunken stupor.......)
