お立ち寄り下さいまして ありがとう ございます。
"accident prone" は "accident (事故) " ＋
"prone (～しがちな、～に遭いやすい) " という
ことから、医学用語で
「事故・災害頻発性素質を持った(人)」
という ちょっと馴染みのない英単ですが、要は
「事故を起こしがちな、事故に遭いやすい傾向の」
という意味です。
具体的な意味は ヒッチコック劇場にある "Shopping
for Death" という作品をみれば分かりそうですが.......
タイトルの "Shopping for Death" の意味にも
納得がゆきます..........
では、ちょっと 覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「保険会社を退職した Clarence と Elmer の
ふたりは自分たちが積み重ねてきた経験や知
識や統計数字を使って 事故に遭いやすい人や
死の危険に晒されている人たちを救ってあげたい、
と思っている。
ふたりは これまでに 事故現場や犯罪現場に幾度も
立ち会っており、事故に遭いやすい人たちに なぜ
そんな事故や犯罪に巻き込まれるのかを教えて
あげる責任が自分たちにあるのだ、と感じている。」
(Retired insurance agents Clarence and Elmer hope to use
their years of experience, knowledge and statistics to save
the accident prone and others in danger of dying.
They have been visiting the scenes of accidents and crimes,
feeling that they have a responsibility to tell accident prone
people why such things happen.)
「ある日、Clarence は Shrike婦人を目にした。
粗野なアル中の女、という感じで、Clarence は
彼女が 死にたい願望を持っている、とみた。
ズケズケと攻撃的な物言いをする女で、Clarence
がみた処、身の上に 災厄が降りかかる典型的な
第一候補である、と感じた。
ふたりは 彼女に 生き方を変え 家の中も片付ける
ように忠告しようとしたのだが、悪口雑言の激しい
反撃にあってしまった。」
(One day Clarence has his sights of Mrs. Shrike, a boorish
alcoholic who he believes has a death wish. She is an aggressive,
hostile woman whom Clarence considers to be a prime candidate
for a personal disaster.
They try to advise her to change her life and fix her house, but
this just causes her to lash out.)
「猛烈な暑さのある日のこと、Shrike婦人が買い物に
出るのを ふたりは目にし、後をつけた。
行く先々で 彼女は 会う人会う人と ことごとく言い争い
をしていた。
これを見ていたふたりは 相談しあった後、 災厄に遭い
そうな彼女を救ってやること決め、彼女を話し合うために
アパートを訪れた。そして、大抵の殺人事件は こんな
暑い日に起きる、ということを彼女に伝えた。
始終 あら捜しをして口やかましく罵る この女は 沖仲仕
の妻なのだが、ふたりは この女が いつかは殺される
のではないか、と思った。」
(On a blisteringly hot day, the two follow her as she does some
shopping, and watch as she antagonizes everyone she comes in
contact with. After some discussion, they decide to take a
chance on helping her, and they go up to her apartment to
talk to her.
They propose a theory that most murders occur in hot weather.
They see a potential murder victim in the nagging wife of a long-
shoreman Mrs. Shrike.)
「ふたりは この女に くれぐれも 気をつけるように、と
伝えた。
が、それも 虚(むな)しかった。
ふたりがアパートを出るのと入れ替わりに この女の
旦那が 積み荷をひっかける鉤 [かぎ] を手 に して
アパートに入って行った。
それから間もなく 彼女は殺されたのだ。」
(They tell her to take precautions, but their efforts fail
As they leave, they see Mrs. Shrike's husband return home
with a hook in his hand.
She is killed soon afterward.)
退職して暇を持て余したふたりの男が 悪意は無い
ものの 結果的に 「死を売り歩くこと」(shopping
for death) になってしまった、というコメデｲータッチ
の作品ですね。
日頃から鬱憤を溜めた旦那が 遂に 爆発し 妻の口を
封じた..............女は 口うるさくない方がいいですよ、と
ヒッチコックは言いたかったのでしょうか.........
