どなたもご存知の文豪 Ernest Hemingway
(1899-1961) の孫娘のひとりは 映画女優の
Margaux Hemingway (1954-1996) です。

祖父 Ernest Hemingway は 散弾銃自殺で
亡くなりましたが、奇しくも 祖父の 35回忌
に 彼女が自殺をしています。
実は、Hemingway 家は”自殺者”が多いことで
知られていますね。

の農園で育った。
が、ﾉｰﾍﾞﾙ賞受賞小説家 Ernest Hemingway の息子である
Jack Hemingway を父として生まれた彼女は 生まれつき
声望を持っていたようなものであった。
21歳になるかならぬかの内に、スリラー映画 "Lipstick"
で主役を演じた後、新進気鋭のスターとして躍進し、
ﾌｧﾍﾞﾙｼﾞｪ香水と 百万ドルのﾌﾟﾛﾓｰｼｮﾝ契約を結び、
彼女の顔は 世界中の雑誌の表紙を飾ることになった。」
(Born in Portland, Oregon, she grew up in on a farm in Ketchum,
Idaho. But dad was Jack Hemingway, son of the Nobel prize win-
ning author Ernest Hemingway and, with that heritage, fame was
almost foreordained. By the time she was 21, after the lead in
the thriller film "Lipstick" (1976), she had a budding movie career,
a $1 million promotional contract with Faberge perfume, and her
face on magazine covers around the world. )
「ところが、１０年も経たぬ内に すべてが失われた。
ｽﾘﾗｰ映画 "Lipstick" で共演した妹の Mariel Hemingway
が、姉の Margaux に いろいろと演技指導を受けていた
のに、姉を喰って 妹の方が ずっと評判を得たのだ。
Margaux は 酒浸りになり、結婚も二度失敗した。
1988年、彼女は リハビリのために ベテｲーフォード・
センターに入所した。
アル中から抜け出して 元の女優業に邁進しようという
努力は実を結ばなかった。
41歳になる頃には 彼女には もう 殆ど何も残っていな
かった。
彼女は 独りで ｻﾝﾀ･ﾓﾆｶ に住んでいた。
子供は無く、恋人も無く、友人も少なかった。
近所に住む人たちが ここ数日間 Margaux の姿を
見かけない、と言って 警察に届け出た。
で、7月1日 住んでいたマンションで亡くなっている
Margaux が発見された。
それも、祖父 Ernest Hemingway の 35回忌の日に。
Ernest Hemingway について言えば、彼の父親 も
弟 も 妹 も 自殺で亡くなっている。
Margaux は 精神安定用 及び 癲癇(てんかん)発作
治療用の ベンゾジアゼピン系の薬 クロノピン を
過量摂取したものとされている。」
(But, within the decade, it was all lost. Her sister Mariel Hemingway,
whose role in "Lipstick" had been suggested by Margaux, was a much
greater success; she had started drinking heavily; two marriages
had failed. In 1988, she checked herself into the Betty Ford Center
for rehabilitation. Attempts to parlay her recovery from alcohol in-
to a revived career failed and, by the time she was 41, almost
nothing was left. She lived alone in a Santa Monica apartment, no
children, no lover, few friends. Neighbors informed police that she
had not been seen for days and, on July 1, she was found dead in
the apartment on the 35th anniversary of the suicide of her grand-
father, Ernest Hemingway, whose father, brother, and sister also
committed suicide. Margaux had taken an overdose of Klonopin, a
benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety and some types of epileptic
seizures. )
