"swallow" は 「燕[ﾂﾊﾞﾒ] 」という意味もありますが、
もうひとつ、「噛まずに飲み込む」という意味もあり
ます。
後者は 比喩的に、
「噂・嘘などを 鵜呑みにする・簡単に信じる」
という意味で使われます。
・He swallowed flattery.
（あいつは お世辞を 真に受けた。）
・Did you really swallowed that lie ?
（おまえ、本当に あのウソを信じたのか？）
再婚した妻が 近所の噂を軽信したため、とんでも
ない悲劇を招いてしまいます.........
ヒッチコック劇場の "The Second Wife" (再婚妻)
というタイトルの作品です。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Martha Hunter は 中年の女性である。
彼女は 文通で知り合って結婚した新夫 Luke の家へ
今しがた越して来たのだが、それは 崩れかかった家
で、暖房も ろくに きいていない家であった。
彼が住んでいる処は これ以上にない みすぼらしい、
冷え冷えとした 居心地の悪い あばら家であった。
新夫 Luke は どうやら この 貧しくて 孤独な 新妻
に対して どう接したらいいのか 分からないらしく、
そこが 問題 で あった。
Martha は Luke にとって 二度目の妻であり、彼の
前の妻が、Martha と同じく 文通で Luke と知り合い
結婚したそうで、Luke と一緒に 休暇旅行をしている
時に "食中毒"で亡くなった、という近所の噂を聞いて、
Martha の 不安が 募りだした。」
(Martha Hunter is a middle aged woman who has just moved into
the rundown and not well-heated home of her new husband Luke,
whom she met through a mailing correspondence program.
His dwelling is the ugliest, coldest, most inhospitable hovel.
Trouble is Luke apparently doesn't know how to display tenderness
toward the needy lonely-hearts bride.
Martha is Luke's second wife and she grows worried after hearing
rumor that his previous wife, who was also a mail correspondence,
died of "food poisoning" while on vacation with Luke. )
「何やら 棺桶に似た箱を目にし、夫が 暗い地下室で地面を
掘り起こしているのを見て Martha の不安は ますます 膨れ
上がった。
Luke が 休暇にでも出かけないか、と誘ってきた時、彼女の
緊張感は 一気に 張り詰めた。
出かける前に 地下室へ降りてみよう、と Luke は しつこく
Martha に迫った。
殺されるのではないか、という恐怖のあまり、Martha は 遂に
Luke を 撃ち殺してしまった。
その後 Martha は 一体 地下室に何があるのだろう、と 思い
見に降りた。
地下室で Martha が 見たもの 、それは 夫 が Martha へ のクリスマス・プレゼントとして 作った 暖炉用の新しいボイラーであった。」
(Martha is even more fearful when she finds a coffin-like box and
sees her husband digging in the dark basement.
When Luke suggests that they go on vacation, her tension sky-
rockets.
Prior to their departure, Luke insists that Martha go down to the
basement.
A terrified Martha pulls a gun and kills Luke.
She then takes a look down in the basement, and discovers that her
husband had installed a new furnace as a Christmas present. )
