"catalepsy" は ギリシャ語 "katalepsis"(kata=
下に + lepsis=掴む) から英語に入ったもので、
「(病理学でいう) 強硬症」
のことで、日本語で 「カタレプシー」 と言うようです。
外部から与えられた姿勢のままで 感覚がなくなって
しまい、そのまま筋肉が硬直した状態が長時間 続く
症状をいうのだそうです。
あまり見かけない英単ですが、ヒッチコック劇場作品
"One Grave Too Many"(ひとつ余計な墓) の 中に
出てきます。
このタイトルについて 或る評者は、
"The poorly titled Hitchcock show One Grave Too
Many has nothing whatsoever to do with graves."
(ヒッチコック劇場の One Grave Too Many は あまり
ピッタリとこないタイトルで、タイトルに墓が出ているが
内容は 墓とは まったく 関係がない。)
と 評しています。
本当にそうでしょうか？
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Joe Helmer には 綺麗な奥さんがいるのだが、ぐうたら
亭主で ずっと職にも就かず 働こうという気もない男なの
だ。
当たり前の話だが、スッカンピンの極貧生活だ。
若い夫婦が住んでいるアパートの電気は停められてしま
った。
金策に失敗して トボトボと帰宅している途中で、なかなか
立派な身なりをした紳士が 歩道に倒れているのを発見した。
どうやら 死んでいるようだった。
紳士は 倒れて そのまま死んでしまったのだ、と思い込んだ
Joe は その男の財布を抜き取った。
帰宅した Joe は 帰り道で 昔の戦友とバッタリ会い、彼が
金を都合してくれた、と 妻に 言い繕った。」
(Joe Helmer is a lazy husband with a lovely wife who's been chronically
unemployed for a long while and seems to lack the motivation to
find a job for himself.
He is having serious financial problems, naturally.
The electricity of this young couple's apartment has been turned off.
Walking home after unsuccessfully trying to get a loan, he comes across
a well-to-do gent, apparently dead on the sidewalk.
After determining that the man has simply dropped dead, Joe takes his
wallet and proceeds home with a made up tale of how he ran into an old
army buddy who owed him money.)
「彼が盗み取った財布の中に メモが入っていたのに気づいた
のは 家に帰ってからのことであった。
そのメモには この財布の持ち主は カタレプシーを患っており
発作時には 死んでいるかのように見えるだけであるので、
メモに書いてある かかりつけ医に連絡して下さい、とあった。
カタレプシーというのは まるで死んでいるかのような様相を
呈する病状のようだ。
良心の呵責に苛まれた Joe は 警察に行き 事情を説明した。
警察は Joe が財布を抜き取った相手の男は 心臓発作で本当に死んだのだが、どうやらその財布の 本当の持ち主ではなかった、と言った。
死んだその男、実は、スリ だったのだ。」
(It's only when he gets home that he finds a revealing note in the man's
wallet. The note says that the man he took it from was suffering from
catalepsy and in all likelihood only looked dead, and that please contact
his doctor. Catalepsy seems to be a disease that makes a man appear dead.
Guilt ridden, Joe goes to the police and tells his story.
They tell him that the man from whom Joe took the wallet actually died
apparently from a heart attack and was not the real owner of the wallet.
He was, actually, a pickpocket. )
スリの男がいなければ、この劇では 余計な死人が登場せずに
済んだのに 余計な墓 (One Grave Too Many) が要った、というのがこのヒッチコック劇場のタイトルの意味ではないでしょうか。
